upgrading my EJ20 NA to EJ20T
Hey guys
Im in the process of buying a early WRX engine to upgrade into type 3.
currently im running a 97 Legacy (Ej20NA) motor that sounds like a machine gun, (somthing broke) its all ran via a version 3 wolf 3d.
Question what else do i need to buy to get it running??
what do i have to do to the wolf?? simple remap or somthing else???
i got stock irs type 1 box so that has to go. i also have to get a water to air intercooler, exhaust, piping but everything else it on the new motor
right or simply swaped with mine right??
1972 Type 3 Fast back, RS Turbo 2ltr, VF34/P20,
3" Exhaust, WAIC, Wolf 3D, Sard 540cc's, Swirl pot and VL Fuel pump, Apexi CAI, Custom VW 4spd with straight cut albins 3.87 R&P, stock brakes

why not find an early legacy front cut with the water to air already fitted. you will need a 1700lb clutch setup atleast ,I tried using a stock 1800
setup and it slipped as soon as it came on boost and the motor is only a stock legacy turbo ej20. I'm using a single side plate box and had no
trouble so far after 6500kms, driven every day.
Pick apart the stock harness from front cut and use that as its all there, and working, just my 2cents .

What he said. Won't cost much more than 4K - don't bother with the Playstation computer - use an OE one

I'd speak to Wolf about your options. You already have the wolf so you may as well use it, and it probably easier to physically set up than dealing
with the stock ECU, especially as I'm guessing that you are already familiar with it!
Wolf probably have a base map for the Subi 2.0L turbo, and unless your ECU is an older model it should be able to be "loaded" with the appropriate
map.
Track down your local Wolf dealer and have a chat to them.
......random gibberish for today.......

Yep, that's a good point; a 'base' map may save on a complete, expensive, retune.

But the OEM ECU is a far better option IMHO for a streetcar... No need to spend anytime on the dyno or fiddling with the settings at all!.... the ECU
does it all.... So much simpler.... Sell the Wolf and put the bux back into what you have.... And picking out the OEM harness to work in a dub is EZ
these days.... there is so much info out there now.... A lot better than when we did out first one (10 years ago).... Nobody had ever done it
before.... Kinda like my EG33 conversion now... Can you say 'scary'?
The WRX engine is a far better option that an RS, but the intercooler on the RS is the only way to go....
We have run a 2100 KEP clutch (with composite BERG sprung centre disc) on our RS powered Notch for the past 10 years and its still holding fine.....
The stock IRS box might be ok for a while, but if you give it large it will die (we have killed 1 'built' box but the current one seems to be doing
ok).... Save your penny's for an upgrade there..... Im in the process of putting together an EJ25 with Sti bits for my Notch and I plan to run a
solid SSP for a while till the bank balance has recovered.....

I will throw a slightly different spin on things...keep the wolf. Big deal spend $300 bucks getting it dynoed..its only got to be done right and at
least you can change your boost and know the thing is not leaning out like crazy. You also have the wiring there for it..is it running a map sensor of
maf?
The other thing is I run an air to air cooler in its normal spot, and am yet to find anyone in any car with air intake temps as low as mine. I took
Paul(1303) for a spin yesterday in the stinking heat....thrashed the crap out of it showing my new gear ratios and the temps with NO spray were 30
degrees. The water to air will run at about 50 -60 degrees.
The key to your upgrade is only take advice from those who have done it and have been driving the cars around. Too many people throw their two cents
in and have never owned a subaru powered car. Will not cost you that much I dont think.
Good luck...
