Brakes

Someone asked me the other day about brake drums.
They wanted to know what was the maximum they can machine drums out to?
I had a chart here somewhere but couldn't find it.
Anyway I just thought it was a good topic to post up here.
Also not many people know but you can have bigger shoes bonded to suit over sized drums.
I think some later beetle drums have the size stamped on them.

Everything 36HP !

OG VW ones dont have it stamped.
most brake shops have the specs though.

you can get the shoes in OS, but best to get them properly radiused to suit the drum as in any case...

From the small VW "Without Guesswork" book 1966
Brake Drums
Type 1
Front ....inside diameter 230.1 + 0.2 Wear Limit 231.5
Rear......inside diameter 230.0 + 0.2 Wear Limit 231.5

so you can go 0.5mm oversize
