short vs long swing axles

I am going to be using a 68 pan for my latest project - tossing up the short vs long swing axles. Apart from tucking the wheels in further, are there any other major differences between the two. Any advice which to use? Won't be hammering around corners (thought the long axles might help cornering) to often if that makes any difference. Will most likely be using rear discs at this stage or type III drums at minimum (drilled for porsche pattern).

Also does anyone know if a 63 body will bolt straight onto the 68 pan? When did the rear body mount (to rear shock tower) change? If it is different, is it relatively easy to mod the 63 body to fit?

Cheers
Alan

If you use long axles on a 40hp body the wheels will stick out past the guards unless you get the wheel off set changed, or made to suit.

I have short axles on my 65 using type 3 late 4 stud rear drums, and have 15 x5.5 inch wheels with 165 michos fitted. They are just flush with the stock guards.

You can adjust the torsion bars to make the wheels sit straight up n down i dont like them tucked in at the top

I am going to run cb performance rear discs in porsche pcd with porsche 6in Fuchs running 205 tyres. Hard to know offsets etc without sizing up the whole set up.

Need to decide on axles now because brakes are different for long vs short axles - don't want to order the wrong ones!!

Cheers
Alan

the 68 will have the later taller rear shock towers (not really taller, but a bigger arch so the body mount is higher). So yes it will require relocating the rear body mount brackets on the body.

Running 205 tyres i think you will have to use the short axles.

what wheels are you going to use is the offset adjustable or fixed.

My wheels were fixed. so i had to use the shorts

Thanks Wes and Dave, I will be using 6in fuchs offset is fixed but don't know exact numbers. Looks like I will probably go the short axles to be safe.

Wes do you know if relocating the rear body mount is difficult? I am capable with a mig (replacing the entire front clip at the moment) - do you just have to drill out the spot welds then relocate the bracket and reweld?

Cheers

Well if you find that the wheels can come out a bit more when its fitted with short axles ... its only a few hours work to remove and fit long axles.

The bracket no dont remove it just cut the bottom section off and re weld it about 1 inch up, too much work drilling all the bracket off

we relocated the mounts on Rhys' baja. just cut the bottom U part off the body mount.

Then put the body on the pan, put the U on the shock tower, bolt everything up with the rubber grommet and then weld the U part back on so it overlaps what is remaining still attached to the body. That way it will be in the correct spot.

Alan,

Have you thought about Customs Offroad's Wide 5 rears that use the Ford hardware. Probably good to have locally sourced components. Might increase track a bit though.

Yep looked into custom offroad kit - wide 5 is no good because I am running porsche pcd. I am sure they could do porsche pcd but their kit works out to be a few hundred more $$ than cb kit (having a mate send it in from the states rather than direct from cb).
