clutch problems..

hi guys.. wondering if any one can give me some information or a bit of advice?
i have recently encounted a problem with my clutch. it seems to be slipping. somtimes is feels if there is nothing there, i cannot select any gears. other times it is fine? when starting my the car with the clutch in and in first gear. it will stall.. and any other gear it just grinds and jumps aroung.. im thinking the clutch cable? but really have no idea? there is a slight knocking noise in the tunnel when pressure is applied? the fork are still moving. please help me. oh its in a 73 superbug..

sounds to me like your throw out bearing clips could be falling off and the bearing isnt pressing the pressure plate properly.

i had this happen in my bug... clips came off and throw out bearing relocated itself behind one of the forks... it felt like there was a little bit of clutch operation right at the end of the pedal travel but pretty much a useless amount.l... it would not go into gear either unless the motor was off.

had to drive home changing gears without the clutch. :o

73 Superbug has the clips attached to the Bearing, so they cant fall off like the earlier ones. It also has the guide tube for the bearing.

If you can hear a noise in the tunnel when you press the clutch pedal, than it is fairly likey the welds holding the clutch tube in the tunnel have broken. It requires cutting the tunnel open, welding the tube back in place, then rewelding the tunnel shut again.

yeah, i'm thinking that too.............the inconsistency of operation in addition to the noise in the tunnel
