Bay Window Kombi Coil Wiring Question.


I am about to (finally) get around to trying to crank over the engine in the bay window bus I saved from the crushers last year.
It has either an 1800 or 2 litre motor (how do I tell the difference?) and I need to fit a coil and battery to try it out.

Is the coil any old 12v job?

What wires go to which side of the coil? It seems there is a thick black one, a thin grey one with dark green stripes and the two that go to the solenoid on each carby.

Am I missing any?

Courteous of the link to the tech resources website at the top of the
listings, I now understand which wires go to which side of the coil,
but would still like to know wether my engine is a 1.8 or 2.0 litre.....

engine number prefix...
2 most common
CJ 2L
AP 1800

The thick black one should be the power when you turn on the key...it goes to +ve on the coil (check with a test light that it gets power when you turn the key on) the thin grey wire with the green stripes goes to the diagnostic plug on the r/h side of the engine bay....connect it to the -ve side of the coil (or leave it off....doesnt matter to run the engine) the two wires going to the solenoids on the carbies plug into the +ve side of the coil, and the green wire from the distributor goes to the -ve side of the coil.

The fan housing has it stamped on a flat piece to the right of the coil and left of the fan

The true engine number is on the case between the fan housing and the oil breather. These numbers can be different if the fan housing has been changed......but the one on the case, which is harder to find will be the true number.

Cool - thanks.

The numbers match on mine.
It is an 1800.
Are they any better or are they not as good as the 2000?
Do they have the same case, crank, cam as they 2 litre and only differ in piston size?
