Fuel Tank breather pipes

Im busy tidying up under the bonnet of my bug cos it smells fuelly and found an endless mix of thin rubber hoses venting the fuel tank joining to a plastic tube which I presume is an condensation chamber. Is it all really necessary ?:cool:
