New 1600 Type 1 Motor

I am thinking of either replacing or rebuilding the motor in my 69 Bug. Does anybody know the approx cost to rebuild a stock 1600 motor. Also has anybody used one of those zero mile factory (mexican) vw motors, what was the cost and are they any good?

a rebuild ranges from $1,500 - $3,000

Last i saw of the "new" motors was $2,500-ish.

Now - you get a cast crank in that as opposed to a good forged VW one.

Guess it depends what you want and how shagged your old motor is.

If you want a "stocker" and no more and you old case has been bore 3 times before

and you crank ground 4 times - well then the "new" motor is looking good

What is the matter with yours??

The motor is just old, tied and worn and in need of a freshen up. Just wondering, what my options are.

Nothing wrong with the "new" motors.

New case, crank cam.... everything

Just not German and no "options"

ie changing CR, different cam, different pistons and barrels

But if your old is "flogged" and not many parts salvageable then it will cost you more than $2,500 for a "new" rebuild of your old motor.

This is where you need to pull it down and inspect it to see its history

My last rebuild on an engine: rings, bearings, brand new heads, machined case, assembly by Stan Pobjoy: WAAY under $2K

My pistons and cylinders were okay, as was my cam rods etc

It may not be as bad as you think. When was the last time you gave it soem 'love'? head torque, tappets, tune etc
