"NEW" 1970 Type 3 ORIGINAL seats for sale !

Well, they're not actually new, but might as well be. These may be the best ORIGINAL seats available. Removed recently from a very well cared-for one-owner Fastback (manuf'd March 1970), with 48,000 miles ONLY (ie. about 4 years average) use. Original RED vinyl. "Basketweave" on front of backrest, & whole of top area of squab, with 7 longitudinal depressed lines in pattern. Totally original, NO tears, wear, splits etc. Sorry, tears (1" max.) around driver's side backrest knob where hands may have scrabbled, but no others. (Could be stiched up or otherwise repaired by a vinyl/trim expert.) Suit really Original or Show car. Vinyl flexible, soft, feels & looks NEW. This original red vinyl cannot be obtained now (I was told). Look 99% brand new underneath, except for a few fluffs of dust, & very slight wear on backrest adjustment cams. Paper labels: "NAUE. Vordesitz. VW Typ III...etc." Black paint on bases in 'almost new' shiny condition, with a few small scuffs. Both have fully working backrest releases and backrest adjustments.

Bought as replacement for our old 1971 Fastback. But we have replaced them with more "tired", not-as-good (but repaired & re-covered) high-backs, at much higher cost (double); and do not require these original items.

Outer Eastern Melbourne. Postcode 3786. (FernTree Gully area.)
$475, pair.
Pickup, or can deliver in Outer/Eastern Melbourne (other Melb./Vic. areas possible; but by Arrangement).
E-mail or U2U please for further details, or contact info.

I knew that if I tried to include every bit of information I'd still forget something! Yes, they are original LOW-backs. 1971 also had identical low-backs: 2-rail. 1972 had 2-rail HIGH backs (first Aust. type 3 with H/back), but these seats would fit. 1973 had 3-rail high backs, so these will not fit. 1969 should also "fit" these seats. Prior to 1969 I'm not sure... maybe 1968, 1967?, 1966?? At some point going back they were "different", but I don't know exactly when/how. Maybe would "work" back to a 1966 fastback...? Should be perfect for a "Show Car", where low-backs are wanted for originality.
Get 'em while they're hot!

They fit all the way back to the beginning. Backrest changed from the square type to the rolled type top in 1967 along with the unlock lever in the side of backrest from memory. All OZ models before 1966 had no lock mechanism. Imported Type 3s up to 1965 had backrest locks operated by cables from the door pillar.

Thanks 1500S, for info. I remember the early '60s type 3 system with the little pedal switches operated by opening the doors, from our family car (German, c. 1963/4) at that time. Didn't realise the backrest changed shape. Or that some type 3's had no backrest lock!!
So these would probably suit from around 1967 type 3, with red trim.

One bit of OZ production to make things cheaper at the expence of safety! The hook which locked the backrest was bent to prevent it entering the recess in the backrest. With no seatbelts back then, a hard aplication of the brakes had the rear seat passenger pushing the backrest and front seat passenger or driver against the dash/steering wheel. It was a relief when those rolled back seats came out in 66 with the lock knob on the side.

Just a bit of history!
