1500 box into 12 wats the go ???
Hi ,
I've just aquired a 1500 box to replace the 62 (I think origional) 1200 box--on the front of a 73 1641 mota,in a 64 body beetle, the new box is
complete hub to hub however thre brake drums are 4 stud and my existing set up is origional wide 5 stud.
Can anyone tell me if the 4 & 5 stud drums/ axles have the same spline counts and are interchangeable ? and are the axles the same length ? the
axle/drum retaining nut is the same size--if that helps---sic.
I'm wanting to keep the existing set up (cept the box) as I have EMPI alloys with of course the old style 5 stud .
Are there any other nice little suprises in store for me with this change over
Please help me before I get myself in the strouble,
Cheers ,

I'm about to do the same thing, axle length will be longer in later box, so swap axles & tubes and your back to using your 5 stud wheels.
Good idea to replace starter bush in bell housing, only cost a few bucks and easy as when the box is out. There are different kinds of bush so you'll
need to check which one you have even if you aren't replacing it. #1 is for a 6v starter in 6v box, #2 is for a 12v starter in 12v box (which is
probably what's in yer 1500 box) # 3 is for 6v starter in a 12v box, I'm not sure if there also might be one for 12v starter in a 6v box.
good luck,
Matt.

you will have to strip both axles sets from each gearbox and put the original short axles on the 1500 box, then all will be good. you will have the
same wheels pattern but with new box. lots of work to do, you should also replace your wheel bearings to sealed units and fit new axle boots and rear
axle seals. and check your brakes as well. good luck.

Hi mate,
I just had all the hubs, drums, brakes, wheel cylinders, etc done so I'm hopin all that will be OK--
Is there a "how too" on switching the axles over anywhere--I'm guessin there is some re-shiming to be done which is deffinately beyond my current
knowledge parameters so danger looms.

start pulling the axles off the 1500 box and then you will know what you are up for when you start on your old box.

I run a 1500 box in a '60 KG mated to a 1600TP.
It works OK but you can measure the gap between the outside edge of the rear tyre & the inside edge of the guard with a feeler guage!
It's a good box tho- better highway perf. Lower final drive ratio??
