Hi

In 74 they went to finer spline with a taper, so the hub wont fit a 71.

All depends on "what" 74

They changed late 74. Some 74's came with the fat early spline - some with the late thin one.

I have had 2 74's and both were thin. Sorry, cant remember what month they were.

Sports Steering Wheel

If its an Autotecnica wheel, you can buy a hub/boss kit that will suit your bug...I bought the wheel that was on a 1500 - spline was too big for the 74 L bug - so a trip to AutoPro sourced the correct size hub..
