WTD: 1300 IRS Bug gearbox in WA

Looking for a 1300 IRS Beetle gearbox in known good condition (not interested in taking chances unless its very cheap!).

Its the one with the 4.375 Rack & Pinion, and i believe the code on the side of the gearbox should be one of:

AA AB AD AE AG AM AP AX

Am in WA.

Cheers for helping

No 1300 IRS. So what you are looking for - ie: all that is available - is a Super Beetle box which is IRS and has a 4.12 ratio

Shit! :o

Hadn't thought that 1300 IRS'd gearboxes never made it to Aus.

You got me worried so have just done some more research and now 100% sure that an 'AM' code gearbox is definitely an 1300 IRS with the ratios i'm chasing - it was in the saloon and cabrio from 8/70

so, AM box, anyone?

Any IRS bug or TIII box will do the job Sam.... The minor ratio differences will make little difference on the road for the average user.... Any TIII box will be a better option for you though.... They are far more plentifull and cheaper than the SSB's.... That said... getting any parts here in Perth is tough these days as we don't have a dedicated VW wrecker anymore....

Hi

Our 1302 and 1303s were all 1600 cc, we never had 1300 cc 1302 or 1303s.

Simon

I've worked out the differences and chewed it over:

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p17/samblers/gears.jpg

Bascically i'm sticking with the 1600 single port but dont think it'll have the oomf to drive a type 3 box (a good 10% 'taller' than the 1300 bug box, and taller than the equivalent bay window with same engine) though many in Pommyland fit these... there seems to be a rapacious desire for top end end speed with IRS conversions but 70mph is fine for me and i'd rather have some in the bag for climbing hills.

But, looks like i havent got much choice (i have a type 3 box available)

Sam

p.s. glad to see the new No H20 is coming - where do i sign?!

Yes, your ideas/theory is correct, but the available Aussie hardware isn't :td:

If you want a 4.375 ring and pinion, get a late 1300 swinger box and convert it to IRS, it's not hard at all, CT has one in his silver Oval. worth doing for a Splitty and a stock engine.

I was just talking about OEM IRS box's that are available Steve.... Sam would be better off sticking with what is actually available here in Oz... unless he wanted to build a box with specific ratios that is....

Most any Dub shop could do it, but I would suggest you talk Mike at Volkshop in O'Connor... He's the local trans specialist in Perth (apart from the performance crowd that is).... Been done plenty of times.... But the critical thing is getting the Diff mesh/lash correct.... Can be a little tough to do without a total rebuild.... Its a little bit of a gamble is all....

Don't think Richard is here, but his boys are... Dieter and Alex (scuse the spelling)..... Shimo did one for me years ago.... It worked fine for years.... It can be done.....

On another note.... A TIII box with a solid single port 1600 will be fine in a splitty.... Infact I have just done a straight axle conversion in a mates bus and it flys!

I'd use someone that actually builds gearboxes for a living, not just a hobby!

Thanks for all your help guys... I think the sensible thing to do would be

1. Have a rummage through the gearbox pile at volkswest, just in case there is an 'AM' code box (you never know!)
2. Stick the type 3 box in, see how i like the ratios. It might be OK, but i'm suspecting it'll be too tall, especially for a loaded camper up in the hills.
3. If that fails, find a 1300 swinger and speak to Mike at Volksshop, use the type 3 box bits to do the conversion.

No problem Steve.... Sometimes I think I might not be explicit enough... Just though I'd clarify what I said.... It pays to sometimes.....:thumb

Hmmm, having a re-think, I may be better just swopping the R&P out in my current stock set-up and making it into a ‘freeway flier’ trans.

I don’t plan to lower it after all.

Cheers for the info and guidance though – all useful
