lighting pistons
I wanted to try and see how much weight i could get out of my mahle 90.5 b's by lighting them well we ended up getting between 28-30 grams per
pistion which I think should make a big diffrence. anyone eles done this or heard of this being done before.

Done it quite a lot. Getting all the pistons of equal weight(along with rods etc) is what makes a smooth engine. the weight is removed from the inside
of the piston. Most of the time it's just removing casting marks and dags then perhaps a small amount of casting from around the gudgeon bosses.
Usually weigh all the pistons then weight them to the lightest one. All of the Formula Vee guys do it with their 1600's and 1200's. Find the
lightest piston you can and equal weight the rest to match.
Less weight to spin up equals more HP...

The Cima/Mahle piston is already a nice light piston,
but normally they can be out as much as 10 g in one set.
If you want to find more savings, a thin wall "tool steel" pin is worth as much again.
Most of the OTHER aftermarket pistons come with a SHORTER pin which hepls with rigidity AND weight.
Lighter reciprocating mass helps reduce loads on important things like rod bolts,
and the actual pin boss area of the piston.
