Best way to repair rust around hood seal channel ?


Hi all. Any suggestions on best way to repair this? Its a 67 Beetle front left if that isn't obvious. Aside from a small patch under the opposite wheel arch, this is the only significant rust in this car so I am keen to get it repaired, on the way to a full resto. The hole next to the side strip is not as bad as it looks but both areas need attention soon.

I have heard that a possible way to prevent this worsening is to grind the channel off and use the type of seal that attaches to the hood. I am not against this type of mod but wanted to get opinions.

Front left? as in passenger side?

You will need to cut that section of lip off, weld a new section on.

Cheap road: Remove as much rust as pos>fibreglass repair>paint

Paved road: Replace metal like helbus has mentioned....:thumb

..But you need a welder and know how to weld to do it in steel.

Most people can do glass.....W

I can cut a metal car in half, lengthen it, widen it, shorten it, rejoin it, fold it, make it, aluminium replace it, whatever. But fibreglass? can't do it at all. All based on your perspective.

I strongly advise against fibreglassing this situation, and also advise against removing the channel. Your car your choice.

I won't be fibreglassing. I have only done a bit of arc welding, which wouldn't be suitable here. I'm confident I can learn MIG with a bit of instruction and am thinking I will be cutting a disc for the hole around the chrome trim and a small square section for around the hood seal. Not sure where I will find a replacement section for that part. I may end up just cleaning it up and welding in a smaller section. ie: just plug the hole with new metal.

You should be able to cut a short section of channel from another wreck.

the best method is to replace with steel but while your there remove the bonnet seal retainer strip and fit a mexican bonnet seal then you wont have the rust issus anymore
