Record Attempt

After having some time off from the drag racing scene and due to the build up of my new drag car , I will now dust off the old car for a crack at the ANDRA national record for a naturally aspirated 4 cyl sedan - SS/C- . The current record is still held by Gary Berg from 1995 at 10.38 and 127.66 mph . I will be removing all of the turbo related junk off the engine and will rebuild it as a 2789cc with dual carbs . This engine back in 1996 in my old pan car @ 1657 lb's went 11.002 @ 122.46 mph .
I have freshened the Autocraft engine with a new 86mm flanged crank , new 6.1'' carrillo rods , a new set of cylinders , the old ceramic/silicon coated pistons have received a new set of custom low tension rings , the biggest camshaft that Pauter make { 343 dur , 446 lift } a set of highly polished lifters and with a compression ratio of 15.23 : 1 , the berg 58mm carbs , the high tech sunoco and vp race fuel , and the addition of a vacuum pump in a lighter and better set-up car should hopfully run into the 10 sec zone . I have been weighing everything that will not be going back on the car and so far have lost 116 lb's , thus bringing the car to around 1590 with the fat driver . I will be running the car at the compak attak round at WSID on May 19 and if the car is above 1600 lb's can be eligable for a sprot compact record as well . I will keep you posted as I go , ROD.

Good stuff Rod, I'll be looking forward to how it runs in N/A form. Any changes to gearbox ratios given the removal of the turbo?

Thats a good start. I'm keen to see a dyno figure before and after installation of the vacuum pump too.

Do you have any video of the engine running, or of the first quarter mile pass? I'd like to know what the biggest camshaft that pauter makes sounds like.

Cheers,

Good stuff Rodney!
It will be nice to see the SS/C Record with an Aussie name next to it!

So I gather that this record attempt will be at the WINTENATIONALS?
There is NO minimum weight for SS/C record, but it has to be set at a National ANDRA EVENT.

For those that don't follow the CLASS SYSTEM in the "Sport Compact Group" series,
for cars like rod's the minimum weight is for TUBE CHASSIS cars of 1600lbs (727kg) or more.

The minimum weight in the same class for PAN CARs is 1750lbs. (around 795kg)

GO FOR IT DUDE!!

Correction :

ANDRA SS/C : no minimum weight or maximum engine size.

ANDRA "All Motor" : 1750lbs Pan Cars only, must be set at ANDRA event.

"Sport Compact Group" All Motor : 1700lbs for Pan Cars, 1600 for Tube Cars, max engine size 3lt(for Volksies)

Records need to be at an event that is a "record setting event",
and need to be backed up with in 1% if the first run.

Cant wait!

Hope to hear that you reset the record, but why is there a penalty for running a pan car? Usually it is the other way around, they usually penalize a tube chassis car. Nice looking car, Mike

That's what I was thinking Mike, it is madness.
But the promoter developed that rule and he was thinking outside the square.
Way outside in this case!

The records for tube and pan cars are two separate records within ALL MOTOR.

The Tube Cars generally weigh lighter, so that it will require less ballast to compete for THAT record,
thus allowing MORE CARS TO COMPETE.

It is a bracket racing class for now, so the different weights are not all that important and now
this will allow cars like Rodneys to compete. Where as before he did not fit into any classes.

If this rule means more competitors and spectators then I guess it is a good thing.
Otherwise we may not have had the oportunity to see Rodney run his car like this.

The engine is now in and almost ready . I am on the dyno in 7 days and am still 2-3 days away from initial start up . I will be using the same transmission with the gearing from the turbo days and should cross the line in 3rd gear @ 8700 rpm's at 120mph . If it happens to go quicker than this I will short shift into 4th to bring the rev's down . I am interested in finding out how a 3 speed transmission will go . The driver will not even fit into his race suit so I presume taking a really big dump before hand will be on the cards as excersise is not an option . I will post the dyno results and let you know the difference that the vacuum pump makes . I know that it has helped to the tune of 15 hp on a vw engine in the US . The new Ceramic exaught that I made should be back from HPC today and will post some pic,s tonight , ROD.

What are you using for a pump? Can you buy something specific?I thought about using one of the air pumps from early Jap motors on mine.

I have heard of guys using air pumps from the wreckers with ok results, not sure how much they weigh though? Moroso also make the pumps in 3 and 4 vane versions for around $800.

Its a crank driven pump that pulls all the air out of the crankcase.

With big pistons moving back and fourth inside an engine opposite each other at high speed it creates a lot of air movement inside the engine. The air on the underside of the pistons creates load and resistance, robbing power. The same air also causes drag on the crankshaft rotation.

By sealing up the case and pulling all the air out of it, these losses are eliminated. It also helps stop oil airation/foaming caused by crankshaft rotation.

Rod's also used low tension pistons rings that create less drag on the cylinder bores. This reduces the cylinder seal a little, but the vacuum pump also helps improve ring seal too.

A vacuum gauge tapped into your engine block will tell you how well your rings are sealing too which is pretty cool, cause blow by reduces crankcase vacuum.

It started first go and is extremely loud . I am only using 98 octane to run the cam in , and am having serious doubts about the amount of heat generated from the entire package . The ceramic coating has already discoloured at the heads and the engine is pre-igniting really bad . I have lowered the timing back to 25 deg. and it still tends to back fire through the carbs . I think that this may be normal for a big camshaft , maybe ? . I have started it and ran it 4 times yesterday and am happy with the whole run in period . I will now remove the valve springs and replace with the race springs . I have the rev limiter set @ 4500 and it shoots lots of flames out the stinger . ROD.

It's on the trailer and ready for the Dyno first thing on Wednesday morning . I will post the results of the different fuels and the difference that the vacuum pump makes . It all looks good at this stage and I have never been happier with the way an engine has gone together especially with this engine combination . I am hoping for a trouble free run tomorrow and am looking to break the 250hp mark . Fingers crossed and ear plugs in , Ill talk soon , ROD.

Dyno Results

Well after 8 hrs at the dyno today Rod asked me to put up some results here, This is a rough rundown of the day and Im sure rod will put up more accurate info and some dyno charts.

Rod stated at the start of the day he would be happy with about 180hp at the wheels, enough to break into the 10's.

First run up with the Sunoco Fuel the engine was heavily retarded (we thought about 25degrees but it turned out to be about 18 or 20 degrees total) and very rich mixtures it returned about 178hp only going to about 6500 as the motor was suddenly leaning off.

After some fiddling with the jets and the fuel log similar runs were recorded with nice stable mixtures.

The timing was then pushed up to 28 degrees and the next run suprised everybody, 230hp atw with the engine now misfiring at around 7500!!

After a lot of mucking around the MSD distributor was found to be at fault and next run 249.something hp!!!! Still with a misfire but now at 8500 and an issue with the fuel supply at the top end!!! According to the dyno operator based on other cars he has dynoed this would be over 330hp at the flywheel!!!!!

The engine did a heap of runs during the day and no oil leaks!! The vacuum pump wasnt removed for comparison runs as we ran out of time with the other problems. C16 was also tried but made about 5hp less.

The car still has some electrical and fuel issues still making a misfire and killing the top end. Fuel mixtures are 12.7ish at the leanest and timing is still fairly conservative so the motor may have some more in it!!

The record is in for a shakeup!!!:bounce
