It's gearbox time
After breaking my gearbox last year at Warwick, and lots of $$$ saving for a new stronger one, Shimo has finished building the new one.
This one has a Rhyno case, Berg polished axles, alloy spool, Albins main shaft with 3.3 1st ,2.06 2nd, 1.58 3rd and 1.21 4th gear with an "L" bug
3.88 ring and pinion.
Just have to fit it, and we are ready for this years event.
The 1st photos are of what is left of 1st gear and main shaft, also the stock axle that broke.
Last pic is of the new stuff.

Hi Dave,
that is a nice spread you have there in those ratios.
With that tall first gear ratio it may take some practice to launch the car.
Either that or a little less clutch clamp.
Actually an 86 crank wouldl make that pretty awesome!

Dave,
I think the tall 1st will make the clutch work!
Pete,
Fabes had a problem before he even got the car on the trailer, broke the nose cone on the gearbox, I think it was the nasty solid mount he was using,
may even have happened at Warwick, He has fixed it now with a neoprene front mount and a proper Berg style intermediate mount

What clutch arm and fork do the rhino cases use Dave?
Early or late?
Have you used through studs on the side covers?
(head studs that go right through to the other side)

Ryno's use the early size clutch fork, I have had to use one from a '71Beetle so I can use the late style throw out bearing.
No through studs, I don't think it is necessary for the power I have.

Its it in yet Dave?
I cant wait to hear how it drives.
It should be a very sweet ratio spread for the street.

It's all in and running, took it for a spin, gear spread is nice and close, 1st is quiet a bit taller than the old box, did a couple of quick starts
to 7000 RPM, see's 50 mph on the speedo then grab 2nd, no problem off the line if you give it enough revs, but where I was testing had no grip
causing lots of wheel spin, on the strip will be a different story I'm sure, we'll see at Warwick.
