Pre and post 1966 axels and axel tubes.

Does anyone know the exact change you get in wheel offset when you change from short axel (66 and earlier) axel and axel tube to a late model longer axel and axel tube?

Cheers,
Ian

Sorry i can't give exact numbers but I believe it is about 45mm.
This is the difference in the actual axle.
There are always other things too, like those later axles normally had wider brakes and different bearing seatings.

Allow around 50mm.
So I have probably been no help at all....

...but no one else could be bothered.

You need the 2 tube next to each other to measure them thats if you have the 2 different tubes

I've done a search on thesamba....and tried one on shoptalkforums (but it crashed), can only find axle lengths.

26-11/16" is a short axle to 66
27-13/16" is the intermediate axle 67 only
28-7/16" is the long axle 68 only.

Did find out the axle tubes themselves are all the same, but the end castings are different lengths (which I kinda knew)....but couldn't find the end casting lengths recorded anywhere.

Thanks Daadubber. That works out to a 1.75" diference, or 44.45mm which will allow me to fit 9" wide rims under the back of the car nicely under the widened guards.

Cheers,
Ian

From memory, the short endcasting is 85mm and the long endcasting around 120mm.... They are positioned on the axletube at differing points.... But also from memory, the total length of the longaxle axle tube is 555mm measured from the backing plate flange to the bellend.... There are only two axle tube lengths.... But as Alan said, there are 3 different axle lengths....

FUCH your early!
