Swing axle super diff??


Hi guys,

Dave (dangerous) is in the process of building my swing axle tranny (3.88 r&p, 3.333, 2.08, 1.40, 1.04 albins)....but unfortunately the new super diff I purchased is not usable.

Full credit to the supplier who will refund/exchange etc however, unfortunately it will be 4 weeks before the next shipment comes in.

If I am any chance of having my oval ready for warwick (even in naturally aspirated carb form) I need to find a super diff (maybe dave can advise threaded vs double snap ring preference) so the tranny can be finished as I have a lot of work still ahead of me!

If anyone has any leads on any in the country that would be great.

Either type will work fine Alan.
Threaded ones are a bit more of a hassle to fit, but have less problems,
provided the oiling is adequate.
But either type is better than none at all.

For general information,
Alan's carrier has the crownwheel location running out 5 thou from the bearing locations.
This is on the diameter and face where the crownwheel bolts up.
Bummer!

Buy one direct from the US, youll get it quicker than 4 weeks.
Stuff I send over usually arrives within a week...

Amazing !

this is the problem with everyone selling junk !

lucky someone like Dave is doing the build and checks such things. This is the exact reason I don't buy too good to be true prices on the internet. It is a must to get parts from a reputable supplier. Who was the one who supplied the diff?

good work Dave!!!
and congratulations Alan for choosing wisely and not importing a complete tranny. Dave has proven himself over and over.

Dave has been in invaluable not only for the tranny build but also for general advice and guidance - I always appreciate his time and hope to be able to repay it in some way down the track.

I bought it from an Aussie distributor and they are genuinely apologetic and doing everything in their power to replace it which I am appreciative of. The only problem is the delay in the next shipment which will make warwick all but inachievable. I'll continue to buy locally as these problems are much easier to sort out when you are in the same country - if I had bought it from a miscellaneous overseas supplier, it would be a nightmare to sort out!

So, anyone have any leads? IF there are none in Australia, I may have to get one urgently from the US (recommendations if necessary - CB performance etc?) The whole purpose of this thread wasn't to complain....merely just to find a new diff so I can get this project moving!

Guys, thanks to Nathan (bugboy) who is kindly donating his swing axle super diff to me to keep things moving along.

Once my replacement arrives in the next shipment, I'll be able to send it to him.

Just a quick update for anyone interested, unfortunately Nathan's (bugboy) super diff was also outside tolerance limits (>.005") which has necessitated his being sent back to the US.

I'll be returning the first diff back to the oz supplier for exchange with some new bits I need (spring plates, retainers etc)....I then ordered a new 10/15 spider gear super diff directly from weddle, and much to our dismay it had exactly the same problem.

Much to Weddle's credit though they have refunded me for the diff so I was just out of pocket for freight (US$160) and Dave has since spent 2 hours machining the diff back to acceptable tolerances (dave you can explain more if you wish as the specifics are a little over my head).


So.....at the end of the day it has cost me a bucket load to get a diff that in the end had to be machined anyway. I don't know what the answer is for anyone else looking to purchase a super diff for their s/a trans - dave seemed to have better luck wtih the scat ones that had the oiling hole predrilled??? Ron at weddle said they have thought about producing their own but it would be cost prohibitive (ie. people wouldn't want to front up the money to buy one). Fingers crossed something decent will come onto the market.

PS Thanks to dave for your persistence to get this problem sorted - it certainly pays to have a tranny builder you can trust that is local and not O/S - would hate to have to send a whole tranny back to the US!
