I have the same problem, I think my beetle is a 1300, but I have spoken to some people & they have said that it is very unlikely that it would have
been left with the 1300 cylinders & so on seeing as you can bolft on the bore kit to upgrade to a 1600. So how do i find out?

Start with the engine number and look up what IT SHOULD be.
The only well to tell for sure is to pull the heads off and measure bore and stroke
