guess what i bought today( now with pics 14/8/07 )

well not yet i buy and collect on monday.

dont have photo's yet but will post them as soon as i can, i found a 73 and a 74 pair of square backs for sale and i couldnt resist, the 74 will be the daily for now and as far as we know the 73 is mainly just parts but would take much at all to get back on the road.
must have been fate as i saw it on the road today driving the wrong way for me to catch up but then we found the poster at the shops

I CANT WAIT

anyway as i said ill post pics maybe tuesday.

btw i dont really know anything about type 3's is there anywhere i should check for rust, both the cars looked really solid from what we could see,. both unregistered but one is being used occationally

would you believe, she's buying a good running type 3, and a second one for spares comes with it, and we already have the beetle on the go.

So we have twin port heads for the beetle now (the spare parts car has a type 1 TP inlet in the boot - yay) and if we get excited then the twin carbs from the spare parts type 3 will make their way onto the beetle also, plus other assorted parts from spareparts car onto good cars.

and after doing all this work getting both the good type 3 and the beetle running properly, she wont let me have the spare parts car, so I can put a 13B where there will be a gaping hole, and possibly cut the roof off so I have a new work car. well maybe not cut the roof off just yet, but a rotary type 3 square has to be a good thing.

it pays to be in a certain place at the right time to find the good bargins. Glad you found something you wanted. i know how it feels to be sharing cars. it tends to be a nightmare and a pain in the butt at some times lol

Nice find!
Although they didn't make type 3's in '74.. so you must have two '73's.. :)

Well jo thanks for pointing that out it made me look at the rego papers and the lighter one is acctually a 72(the drivable one) i guess she knew that they were consecutive years, we dont acctually have papers for the second one so not sure exactly what year, just going on what i was told.

now im just waiting for a chance to get in and have a proper look/poke around to see exactly what is going on, probably wont happen until the weekend.

ok another correction, the parts car is acctually a 70 and the good one is a 72, dont you love being misinformed, not that it matters but it is nice to get to the truth

whoo hoo, she is on the road and regestered, did and oil change, spark plugs, valve clearences, adjusted and cleaned the brakes and i get to drive her everyday now yay, still got to stop 4th gear popping out but its all good, she runs so much better now than she did when we picked her up.

BTW we called her clarabell

it's good to hear that you have her on the road, with the 4th gear replace the transmission fluid with fresh stuff up to the correct level, this fixed the problem with my beetle.

jess and jace:cool:

Hope you have fun driving it around! Type 3's rock! :kiss

Just keep an eye on that gearbox.. cause popping out of gear is what mine did just before it went completley! :(
Hopefully you'll have better luck and the above suggestion will fix it!

well, I think I'll add some more.

after the oil change and tune, Clarabelle runs much better, but still a knock in the engine that sounds like tappets but isnt (also coming from number 3, my guess is she's been a bit hot at some stage).
put some fuel in the spare parts car, refitted the carb balance tube, and it runs like a dream, apart from the broken exhaust studs on the RHF pipe, which earned him the name Victa, because it sounds like a bloody lawnmower.

IMO Victa is in too good condition to use a few parts and trash the rest, and is virtually complete, apart from doortrims and seats that are on Clarabelle (but are white, so Danielle is finding some black stuff, which means I get the white bits baaxck), and the engine and gearbox which will soon be in Clarabelle. so, since I have some funny little roundy motors in the shed, and a perfectly good Victa with no engine,

I put 2 and 2 together and get a rotary powered Type 3, which accorsing to my other rotarian friends, is actually a very cool thing, especially if I make it a few inches closer to the ground. oh and its officially my type 3, because Danielle only wanted it for the spare parts, and the rest she doesnt want or need.

I'll try to make sure we get lots of pics of both the destruction and reconstruction of both cars, for your viewing pleasure.

Finally with the new engine in!!

well, I've been going over the second engine and gearbox getting it running on the bench and ready to fit in, finally fitted it last weekend 16/6 and it all bolted straight up and seems to be having only minor teething troubles.

anyway, figured out the old gearbox jumped out of fourth probably because the oil was low, probably due to the oil from the gearbox now being all over the clutch. I have also started to strip down the old engine in readiness to build it up for another engine swap.

the first attatched pic if it works, is the difference between the two heads

Danielles beetle is back of the road for its makeover, and I got the job of project manager/head mechanic/artistic advisor/ideas man.
and somehow she got a type 3, which is all good, because I got 'Victa' the 'spare parts Type 3'

here is another pic showing the tops of the pistons on the right hand bank, the front piston is obviously hitting the head fairly well making the noise, but the other also has minimal carbon buildup, indicating it is also going closer than it should be.
