The loose cam gear was diagnosed last year, finally giving way (not totally) in June. I thought of searching for a replacement engine but it all
happened too fast, no time, money or space for a restoration.

The motor can be repaired. Just everything, (Pistons, barrels etc_ have 2 come out. basically the last thing that comes out is the cam shaft.
