My brother's 71 Fastback Turbo EFI 2332cc
Here's a few pics of my brother's 71 Fastback. He built it all up from a car he bought from my grandparents in the early 90's.
They had bought it as a demo from Doherty's in the early 70's and drove it till it died then parked it in a shed for the next 15 odd years till my
brother got his hands on it.It was a TLE and that was the only reason it kept going was the EFI. you could literally turn the motor over by hand!!
Anyway he stripped it and got all the body work done then the interior modified and retrimmed. We sourced a 2nd hand motor for the time being till he
saved up some more $$ for a big Type 1.
Here's a pic of how it currently sits awaiting all the goodies.
Well he built a 2330cc with IDA's etc etc and it went pretty hard. It ran a 14.5@92mph at Willowbank in full street trim with a broken clutch
tube(basically no clutch!!)
After that he got the dirts with a few small things breaking and parked it in his garage. Then after nearly 18 months he decided to pull the engine
out after only about 2500km's and get it sorted for a turbo and EFI set up.
The motor was stripped and rebuilt then sat on the bench while other parts of the car were worked on and money became available.
Well he got some more $$$ and after talking to the likes of Dangerous and Peter Page decided his current engine combo wasn't strong enough for what
he wanted.
Guess what?? Engine strip time again!! Now a new case (Auto Linea), new rods(carillo), new pistons and barrels(CE), and some more machining and other
components to make it strong enough to run decent boost from a Garret T4 with hiflow housings split entry exhaust housing and larger wheels.
CES racing have fabricated a complete stainless exhaust system mandrel bent and tuned length for the turbo as well as custom made intake runners and
plenum to run a modified V6 Commodore throttle body. Add a 8L dry sump tank and 400x250 x 5" thick intercooler with custom made tanks which sits
where the bellows used to be with a 10" thermo fan to pull more air through the cooler. Modified Scat IDA manifolds with injector bosses machined
into the bottom of the runners to spray the fuel right into the port also done by CES.
There went the better part of 8K for CES' work!! After that it took a while to get some more $$$ to buy all the new engine parts.
We started work on solid mounting the gearbox with a very solid front mount and ladder bar type mounts from the top shock mounts(beefed up) to the
bell housing of the box. Add to that new CV's and JCL spring plate retainers that were an absolute mongrel to fit on a type 3. All the rubber mounts
that hold the torsion bar housing and rear end onto the floor pan have been replaced with billet alloy bushes to solid mount everything and have zero
movement. That in itself was a big job!!
All the brakes have been done up with calipers overhauled and new fluid, pads and DOT approved braided brake lines to all 4 corners. the rear drums
are gone and replaced with Volks conversions cross drilled disc brake set up.
New ball joints and tie rods on the front end just for safety's sake as it will hvae bit more poke than the stocko 1600!!
Interior wise is the addition of an Autometer Tacho with shift light and tell tale as well as Autometer boost gauge. In the factory console is the Oil
temp and oil pressure gauges. 4 point harnesses mounted securely to the rear parcel shelf hold you in the Cobra Clubsprint seats.
The spare wheel is gone and now houses the Bosch motorsport fuel pump from a 996 Porsche from memory, a 2 litre swirl pot, auxillary Carter fuel pump
and a glass bowl type water trap filter.
At the moment we are waiting for the engine to be finished being built by Dangerous, then it will be fitted to the car so that all the oil lines and
fuel lines can be finished.
Then it is off to the tuners for some indepth wiring and fitting of all the sensors that the Autronic needs to run this baby.
Apart from a few more cosmetic things I have to do to put the finishing touches on it we are hoping to be ready to roll and put some k's on it before
Warwick.
Will post up some pics later and keep you all posted of our progress.

Nick yes you can get DOT approved braided lines now and they have a approval number on the ends.
Email Brad and he will tell you where to get them

Good to see some pics Troy and Brennden......will be great to see if finally run again!!
PS Can you give me a brief rundown of the fuel system?
ie. Tank > filter > EFI pump > injectors > carter pump > swirl pot .....etc (I know this is not right, but you get what I mean hopefully)

interesting and will mean more when I next see the car in the flesh...

Bond these brake lines were done by the Brock Shop at Underwood. They have a special tag on the line with a number from memory with a clear cover over
the whole line itself.

Troy's Engine
It is a 2332cc with Okrasa crank and Porsche journal Carrillos.
It has CP pistons of 84mm diameter and will have 7.7 comp with .060 gaskets for deck.
Heads are old KRE welded and ported deals with 42 and 37.5 Manley valves.
This engine made 110 at the wheels with the low comp but old pistons had a heap of deck to get the comp that low.
Went pretty fast considering how low the comp was.
Cam is an old speedway grind with mid 260's@.050".
Should go well on AND off boost with EFI and tight deck.

Yep billet strainer plate with VW logo machined on it. That was a Christmas present from a few years ago. Had a mate who was a machinist for Paul
Morris Motorsport at Norwell. He could make practically anything!!!!
Alan as far as the fuel system goes it follows the following route.
Tank -> water trap/filter -> carter aux pump -> swirl pot -> bosch motorsport pump -> to injectors -> return line -> bottom of swirl pot -> out top of
swirl pot -> tank.
Any other question give Troy a call.

Well engine is in the car with most of the bolts on's(exhaust, manifolds etc etc) added as well. Troy is sorting the oil lines out and spending a
fortune on Earl's fittings and braided line to finish it off then it's onto the fuel system in regards to fitting the fuel rails and finishing of
some of the fuel lines. A few more cosmetic things then off to the tuners on the 17th. will post up some pics later.

manifolds are getting prepped and cleaned ready to go on as well.

Fan housing is all painted and ready ot go along with the fan. alternator checked out ok from my auto elec mate and Troy has almost got the crank
pulley modified to fit the sensors for the ECU trigger points done. Car goes to CES Racing on thursday/friday to get the drain for the turbo fitted as
well as the fuel rails and throttle cable. They will also make a nice big breather tank too.
Then monday off to the dyno for that last piece of the puzzle.....
Will post up some pics later this week as I now have access to my computer at home. Just have to download some pics.:thumb

Progress moves slowly as the money side of things needed to be replenished. Car at this stage is ready to go to the dyno with oil systems checked and
ok, fuel system check and ok, pulley set up and crank trigger brackets and sensor all done as well. Only needs a couple of small bits of wiring for
gauges sorted then off to the dyno. Troy is starting to think he is seeing the light at the end of a very very long tunnel.(like about 5 years long
!!) Let's just say the look on his face was one of relief when we hooked everything up and hit the key to test oil pressure etc and it all went to
plan and made all the right noises!!!
Will get some pics this week and post them up.
