Greasing front end Type 2
Hi All. Theses past few weeks my Kombi had developed a steering wobble. Only on very smooth road surfaces and only at low speeds. The steering
wheel could be felt - and seen - to be oscillating to and fro. I finally got to have a look under, can't see anything loose or missing, but took
the opportunity to squirt in a bit of grease into three grease nipples - one in the centre at the steering shaft thingo, and one each side on the arm
things behind the wheels.
Forgot about it all this week, now I've suddenly realised that I haven't noticed the problem. Maybe grease was all that was needed. So, how
many grease nipples on a kombi, and where, and how often, please? BTW, steering things (bushes?) were renewed/overhauled just a couple of years
ago.
Another question is: The grease nipples behind the wheels are lower down, yet grease comes out up the top of the wheel support thing. That is to say,
there is one entry point for grease behind the front wheel, but two exit points. No? Could someone enlighten me? How does the grease get up there - it
has about 4 or 5 inches to travel, if there is an inside path? I'd like to grease my Kombi more often, and more thoroughly. Also, anyone had a
wheel alignment done on a Kombi? Thanks in advance.

I only have five on mine.
one for the swing lever shaft, (centre) and one on each outer end of the torsion bar tubes.
The front end on mine gets a bit wobbly when one of the ball joints is on the way out, there is also a couple of small ball joints on the ends of a
shaft that runs from the pittman arm, to the swing lever, these also can make it a bit dodgy.
One other thing that has improved the handling of my van is fitting light truck tyres, (8 ply) it has taken a lot of the roll away that I use to
get when I had radials (sidewall flex) fitted, it handles a lot better now, especially on roundabouts and freeway on ramps, and I get more milage out
of them as well, also correct tyre pressure can make a big difference.
Check all your joints for play and go from there.
PS I grease the frontend on my Kombi every time I change the oil (5000km's)

Make sure that the wobble isn't a bubble forming in the tyre. I had one that wobbled the car for a few days before I could find out what it was.
I said to myself that it would last for a few days so that I could fix it on the weekend. Well it blew out on me. It's lucky that I was only
driving out of the car park and not on a high speed corner.

5 one for each ball joint on each side[if you found 1 the other will be above or below that one,and the centre one.
I do mine after most services :beer

Thankyou, gentlemen.
Yes, a damaged tyre was the first fault I looked for, as I tend to run higher than normal pressures. I thought that one carcass may have torn inside,
but can't see any bumps.
Can't see any grease nipples on the ball joints. 5 total, eh? I've found 3, and if there's one on the brake pedal pivot, that's 4,
one more to find.

There's 5 on the front end. The centre one for steering obviously. The as you look at the two tubes running left to right for the front
suspension, sounds like you found two on the lower tube. There are another two directly above them on the top tube.
There are 4 swing arms in the suspension and there is a bearing for each requiring grease.
It's also recommended to have the wheel off the ground when greasing these.

Umm... not wanting to sound stupid, but it's recommended in the Bently manual. Never questioned it I suppose.
I would say it is to take some of the load off the bearing and torsion bar so the grease can spread more evenly??
The manual recommends greasing every 24000km, but like you I do it every service. It's and easy task, and can only help in keeping water, sand,
salt etc out.
Just wish the wheel bearings were that easy to maintain.
