Cheap oil - Why do people buy it?
I was standing in line at the servo this week to pay for my fuel when i noticed the girl in front of me was holding a bottle of cheap no name brand
engine oil. I thought
to myself why would anyone consider putting that in their car?
To make the situation worse, she walked out the door and started heading towards a current model Golf TDI. I couldn't help myself and after paying
for my fuel, ran over to her and said 'I hope your not going to put that cheap oil in your Golf?'
She accepted my offer the come over to my place nearby where I put the approved Castrol VW505/01 spec oil in it (which i use in my Passat). She
offered to pay but i declined. I had done my good deed for the day and saved another volkswagen from running on cheap servo oil!

why must people intervene?
is it really to do a good deed? or merely an attempt to pick up?

My thoughts exactly, Nick!
Good to hear someone cares enough to go out of thier way to save another VW...
Kinda reminds me of that Magnatec advert with the hippy; 'Stop engine cruelty!'.
A good deed done is a good deed earnt.

I remember feeling bad when i was buying some home-brand oil at the supermarket once.

And thats all i would use it for..

Ive done worse than use cheap oil.
I once had a Datsun Bluebird Pagoda Roof from the early 1960s. It was when I was a hippie-on-a-hill near Quaama in NSW. The engine was so clapped out
that I got a drum of used oil, free, from a local service station and poured it through the engine at a great rate. It kept the car going for
months.
I sold it when it started to rattle a bit too much. The guy who bought it, replaced the water pump, which was the rattle, flushed the engine, put new
oil and two cans of Nulon in it and drove it to Queensland and back.
The oil must have been a cocktail of petrol engine and diesel engine oils, along with gearbox and differential oils. It was a potent brew but it kept
that old engine alive.
I used the residue in the 44 gallon drum to preserve and whiteant proof fence posts and shed stumps. Further coktailed with creosote it worked a
treat.

I had a mini that used heaps of oil, out the exhaust, so I used to use the oil drained from oil changes in my other car, I think that is recycling
isn't it?
Please, I need drivers side window regulator (winder mechanism) for my '54

I think you'll find that failing to change the filter is a much greater sin than putting crap oil in..but yeah, not so hot in a new TDi motor. which
makes me wonder, why on earth did it need oil if it was new? should still be under waranty and not be leaking anything.

When Only the Best will do....
Your engine is only as good as the oil in it...
so a good engine deserves the best....
although using Mobil One synthetic is a bit too far...:P:P
If You have a noisey engine better to use 20w/60 engine oil...
I've never used cheap no name oil in any of My cars even when the engine was burning oil...

You can use cheap oil and diesel as a good engine flush, you will be amazed at the amout of crap and sludge it will remove to keep your good new oil
cleaner for longer.

Forgive me but you did say Datsun....isn't it the norm to use secondhand oil run through a pair of pantyhose. Besides gearbox, diff, engine oil it
all burns the same in a datsun.
What my garage isn't messy........Well chaos is a form of order isn't it?

not necessarily true with modern motors and especially with oil changes stretching out to 15000 k's.
new motors still use oil. specially if they are hunting really good fuel economy figures - like the Gen3 v8 for the commodores. the amount they use
varies between motors etc... but have read on the watercooled sites (particularly in the US) that the new vdubs can use enough oil between services
that the oil warning light comes on... so she may have just been topping up between servicing.
see.... air and water do mix
