Running rich, 2L Kombi

Just a quick question. My stock dual carb 2L kombi has started running rich recently (over the last few weeks).
It still runs OK, just been noticing a bit of black smoke from the exhaust, the exhaust smells of petrol and the economy is a little down.
I'm assuming the carbs need adjusting, where's the most likely place to start looking? Float level, idle mixture screws etc?
It is regularly serviced, timing, dwell and compresion are all OK. Air filter is not too old also.
The carbs were overhaulled ~30000km ago and new needle and seats were installed then.

First thing to do is make sure the electric choke flaps are opening fully. After it is wamed up stop it and pull the duct off the top of each carby, the top flap should be open, allowing you to see down to the throttle butterfly at the bottom.
Next to check would be float level and the needle valves.

Hi,
another starting point is take a spark plug out of each side to see if you are dealing with one carbie only :), after you have checked both choke flaps are Functioning OK

And once you've checked that the chokes are opening and all is well physically with the carbs and linkages, you just adjust the mixture and idle speed on the left carb. The little screw on the top front of the left carb is the mixture, and the big one is the idle speed.

Thanks folks, will check it out and let you know!
After I re-read my post, I though I must check the chokes, I usually re-check them come winter time.

Unfortunately not that simple. Chokes working fine.
Checking the needle/seat and float level will have to wait for the week end!

Please tell us that you are running Unleaded or Premium Unleaded.
Also that you havent started buying a new cheap fuel that you did not before.
-
Can you get " plug cut " colour on spark plugs with Unleaded or do you need to use Premium unleaded as someone told me.
I know you definately wont get it with Lead Replacement rubbish.

Good point Glen. I usually use PULP, but on trips, or if I need to fill up when the price is rediculously high I use ULP.
As for "plug cut" colour, never tried it on the Kombi (used to on my motor bikes), and as you say on ULP they always appear slightly sooty anyway.
The lead deposit was a handy guide to temp and mixture as it changed colour to tell you.
