Turn it on/off at the power button on the headunit, but have constant power available wired in.
Or have wired to ign and ony use stereo when car is running.
Or have a separate power switch to enable power when ign is off.

if u dont listen to it when ur not driving then like helbus said just hook it too the ignition circuit
but thats a bad idea if u listen to it a fair bit when the engines not going as u have the ignition on with out the engine running will fry
points/electronic ignition/coil and flatten battery real fast
so u can hook it to constant power depending on the unit
my JVC and kenwood decks for instance have standby mode when not on so the face is always powered up

My sony and pioneer go to standby mode with the face lit up if you press the power button once quickly. But if you hold the power button down for a
couple of seconds then the unit turns off completely. That's how I run mine with them constantly connected to the battery.

yeah the kenwood is like that but the jvc's the power button still stays lit up all the time which over a few weeks would still discharge the battery
abit
i got around it by using the terminal on the ignition switch that operates the buzzer if u open the door and leave ur keys in the igntion.
so my headunit powers up only when i put the key in the ignition but doesnt need to be turned on.
unfortunatly tho this terminal is only on 71 and later bugs
and not even all of them
my 74 1300s both had blank spots where it was meant to be but all my supers have it

I've never had an air cooled VW with an accessories
position on the key switch....
there is a Fuse that is live all the time, so you can connect it up to that, and switch the unit on/off when you want it on...
I have a JVC and Light Emitting Diodes use very little power, so having the face plate light up is no problem..
I usually leave My JVC going all the time I drive and park it,
go to the shops and turn it off when i get home...
In older VWs, I used to have a switch to turn the stereo unit on/off...
and Joel,
I've never seen or heard of that key switch that turns accessories on when the key is inserted...
Maybe the switch came from a 1975 or 76 beetle...??
or from an overseas model...
I'd like to have one of those...
In the US they had lots of extra electricals, and they used different wiring diagrams too...

Hi Lee,
the buzzers were only fitted to US beetles from 71 on im pretty sure but nealy all of them have the terminal for it on the igniton switch from 71
onwards
from memory its marked S
its a half size spade terminal
but yeah US beetles had alot of extra equipment that we never got like heated back windows, park brake and brake fail warning lights and the seatbelt
interlock system which wouldnt let the car start unless the drivers seatbelt was on
i have some chat buddies in the states with Lbugs
and its funny seeing all these features that are just blank plugs in mine LOL

so, does that mean, there isnt evenm a common ignition switch available for an aircooled VW that has an accessories position on it??
thats really awfully annoying, because it might not be just a stereo you want to use occasionally without the car running.
Danielles beetle is back of the road for its makeover, and I got the job of project manager/head mechanic/artistic advisor/ideas man.
and somehow she got a type 3, which is all good, because I got 'Victa' the 'spare parts Type 3'
