Beetle 1964 - Adelaide Updated 3/3/08
Newish Member Alert!!!!
Well I took the plunge and bought my second beetle!
I live in SA, and decided to buy a nice example of this classic car. Luckily I was able to purchase a 1964 Beetle from a forum member.
I think he sold it to me at a great price and I am very grateful to him.
I am a REAL Beetle rookie with no real idea what I am getting myself in for. In fact I asked the previous owner if all the work that he had done would
mean a trouble free run rather than being on the tip of the iceberg in terms or repairs and hassles.
He replied that these cars are the ice berg!
I have seen and read heaps about all your rides so I thought I should start to document my journey also.
If you are looking for tips and idea on how to repair and restore your car, forget it as "I know nothing".
I have bought all the books and even a DVD and hope to learn how to love my beetle and repair/resotore as required.
I was thinking a name might be an idea but at the moment I am struggling so your ideas would be appreciated!
At the moment I have had a painful start to my beetle experience with some issues but I will get into that more later!
Before I bought my current car I had a false start with an ebay purchase.
This was an excellent 1975 bug but a woman I was bidding with on the car decided she wanted it at any price. I had bought it outside the auction
process.
So it resulted in a tidy profit for me and she got a great car. I often think I should have kept the this one. I am sure some of you will know the
car.
I think it had a debiasi 1825 motor in it. It was a nice car but needed some front end work and just some love in a few places.
I REALLY wish I had kept it and still bought my 64 beetle but sadly life and my situation didn't let it all pan out.

Back to what I now have!
I will start with some pics that the previous owner sent me.
It is a 64 Beetle with a 1973 1641 Engine.
As you will see below most of the hard work has been done although there are still a number of things I still need to do to get her up to scratch!
Sorry about the long first post, I will post some more info about my dramas so far if anyone shows some interest!

Lesson number one: Move your fuel filter to the pipe BEFORE the fuel pump, not the pipe between the pump and the carby, as it is on your car. That
way, a cracked filter won't keep pumping raw fuel from the fuel pump - it will starve the fuel pump instead
Makes the engine bay fire smaller and more manageable y'see...

Man, your car is awesome. I loved it when I saw it out at Aaron's for your repair. Look forward to see what you may have up your sleeve with this
one, looks lovely.

Well since my purchase I have a list a little issues that I have had to deal with.
In fact someone suggested that the car may be jinxed.
First off was being reveresed into whilst stationary.
Not too much damage but enough to annoy me.
Used some paint that was left over from the original paint job.
Eventually Aaron got the paint to stick but it is a different shade of blue. So instead of improving my car I am actually making it worse at the
moment.
Here she is with the off coloured bonnet.
This picture really makes it stand out but it really isnt that bad and is sort of hard to pick unless you knew.
After the bingle I have had oil spitting out the filter (which I was able to fix by cleaning the filter) and now the striker plates arent holding the
door closed very well!
Oh well, good news she did go in her first show.
My Mum and her parnter took her to a Rock n Roll weekend event.
That wasnt without dramas either as the drivers lock broke and had to be replaced. Amazingly a guy near my Mums partner has a 64 Beg out the back and
he was able to fix it for $20.
Problem is now the lock is very sticky and I feel like I am gonna snap the key off every time I lock and unlock it!
Anyway final pics of her in the show.

I have to find out more about the moving of the fuel filter that was mentioned!!! Scaring the sh%% out of me!

I must admit I have been a bit off the boil with the VW atm.
I havent driven her for ages.
Problem is I really like things to be perfect and at the moment the car is very good but not 100 percent perfect. Maybe I am expecting too much?
You have inspired me though, I will give her a wash (highly illegal but well) and take her for a cruise.

Well the fun continues!
Actually I am really enjoying my beetle atm.
Thinking about Rock n Roll show at Birdwood Motor Museum and the Day of the VW.
Lately I am getting a rubbing sound in the front end which I have to get checked out soon.
Problem is VW speciallists are short on supply south of Adelaide.
Oh well I am sure I will find someone some day!
I reckon we need a client & mechanic speed dating service in SA so we can all get to know each other!

Cant wait for the day of the vw to meet you all and get some advice and ideas for perfecting the beast!
If anyone is going to the Rock n Roll Rendevous I will be there too ... if I cant get the suspension/front end stuff fixed that is!!!!
