my project is coming together (slowly)

I'll post some more pics of my 63 beetle project (68 pan) soon (just got a digital camera)....here is a couple of pics of my Fuchs (just polished and front pair narrowed to 4 1/2 inches). It is always encouraging to get some shiny stuff to keep the motivation going (fingers crossed the rest will be ready by Nambucca)

Alan
Project to date:
Fuchs narrowed and polished
Pan dual circuit golf master cylinder installed and half tranny strap
Heaps of welding on the body (including new front clip from half way through tank)
Gearbox currently in shop
Engine machine work done (type IV)
Many parts purchased and many more to buy!

Here are some pics of the body taken yesterday....still have a little bit of rust repair to complete as well as some custom dash mods and a few other little bits before blasting and bodywork commencement.

Who reckons I won't get it finished for Nambucca?? I work full time and will be doing majority of body work, paint, (plus painting pan) and all mechanical assembly after hours and on weekends - can anyone say "late nights in July"?

I have a busy time ahead but am confident (sort of) it will be done in time!

Your on Brad - carton of VB it will be finished for Valla....better get my arse really into gear - I'll need that carton to unwind after the all nighters!

The wheels did polish up nicely, wish I had a pair of original 4.5 inch wheels for the front but the cut down 6's will do for now - they still look nice.

I'll keep posting pics with progress - I pick up the pan this weekend, hopefully will have it painted early next week....also hoping to finish the welding/mods by end of next week on the body then off to the blasters. Then just have to get my 4 wheel discs in from CB performance (hope they don't get held up in shipping).

Righto then

Better just make it clear, I will not be at Valla, I will give Wes the VB if it looks liek you are going to make it and he can be the judge of if it is finished or not.
My definition of finished is on road registered and complete. I do not expect it to be concorse or any of that stuff, just a complete registered and road worthy bug.

Go hard it will be worth the loosing if you can make it

Thanks Brad - I agree with your interpretation of finished - I expect to have it upholstered painted in colour (not primer) and registered......ahhh...I can taste that beer already :beer

Here is the latest pic - the pan has been blasted and etch primed - some repairs done today - should be in POR15 tomorrow.

Body went off to the blasters on Friday - should have it back by next weekend for some more rust repair and the bodywork. If I can have the paint finished by the end of June I should still be in with a shot for Valla - fingers crossed!

Here is the pan again - now in POR15 chassis coat....pic is pretty crap because of light. Now I can start bolting stuff on again!!

The pink stuff in the earlier shot was blade putty (fine stuff) to fill in some fine pitting etc.

Slow and steady wins the race, I can say that of the many cars I have rebuilt the crappy ones were the ones I rushed for car shows, so head down bum up is all good but if time runs out, so be it, you will surely kick yourself if you cut corners and it doesnt measure up to how you wished it would.
On the other hand by the time Herbie was registered I was so sick of doing it that I havent even found the motivation to buff Him or even fix the windows that wont wind down or even get up the energy to wash him. but I hide behind the fact that herbie was never a show car, he was a race car and should be finnished accordingly. Arent I a lazy Bugger? but I will get my second wind and then onto the Splitty Kombie straight after the Mazda rx3 and the repairs on the MGB and the Tyres on the GSXR and the front suspension Bushes on the Econovan and a lick of paint on the trailer.
What do you mean, I've got too many Toys? I can if I want.
What youve done so far looks like it will shape up into a real weapon of a bug, good stuff, hope you get it done in the time you want and I look forward to seeing it finnished but I took 3 months to do what I was forecasting as 2 weeks work. Good luck, Tony.

Here is the case as of yesterday - line bored, main bearings fitted, everything balanced, case acid dipped, flywheel lightened and surfaced etc...I have resigned to having it assembled by a mechanic here in brissy - would like to have built it myself but wouldn't want to screw something up just to finish it quickly!

Was hoping to pick body up today from blasters but it won't be ready till tuesday

It is a sad day today for this project.....I have been beaten by the rust monster that reared its ugly heads after sandblasting! I don't want to do a dodgy job repairing it or pay someone a squillion to do it properly....so unfortunately it won't be done :cry

I'll still be there at valla but not in a vw for the first time :(

here is just one shot of the rust in one door

Brad - looks like you will be one carton of beer richer come valla! I enjoyed the challenge but such is life!

here is the body in etch primer....lots of panel beating to do (and I thought it was nice and straight before blasting) :puke

Realistically though it is not too bad....just want to do things properly the first time.
