CB for sale in North Tas

This CB was advertised again this week in The Examiner. I'm surprised it hasn't been snapped up.

This has been advertised for a couple of weeks, and came up before earlier in the year. Unfortunately I can't make my budget stretch this far, but if there is anyone here interested I could take a look and post up some pictures.

I agree with Paul.....pics would be great!

I'm always puzzled by people who run text ads trying to sell vehicles, who type a few words, and seem to think the world will beat a path to their door to buy what they have to sell.
It's my deep conviction that good pics, with a detailed description of the vehicle at multiple sites, always increases the chances of a sale for the ad lister.
While I know nothing about the web site (autoguide.com.au) where this CB is listed, and have no knowledge of readership numbers of this site, I believe there are numerous other sites which would increase the odds and enhance the sale of this rare VW model.
If this in fact is a serious sale offering, why wouldn't one want to increase one's chances of a sale by broadening the marketplace and advertising at sites which likely have more traffic and exposure?
Is the sale effort focus only on Oz, or is the intent to create wider exposure?
In addition, why isn't more contact info provided? If someone from halfway around the world might have interest in this vehicle, wouldn't an email address or other contact info be helpful to a potential buyer?
I just feel some of the ads I see aren't particularly well thought out or planned.....and as a result, the sales inquiries are exceeding slow or few, and usually result in no serious exchanges of information between a seller and a potential buyer.....which results in no sale of the vehicle.

Three rules for increasing sales possibilities:
1. pictures......the more the better, along with detailed descriptions
2. advertise at multiple web sites with broad exposure
3. provide as much contact information as possible

Some suggested sites for potential buyers: (I'm sure there are others with which I am unfamiliar .....in the UK for example).
1. http://www.ebay.com.au/
2. http://www.ebay.com/
3. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/
4. http://www.hemmings.com/

Regards,
Steve

I think it's a Tassie thing. To some people the world ends with the local paper and they don't feel the need to advertise further. A lot of people believe that no-one from 'the mainland' would possibly be interested in a Tassie car as they don't know how they would get it back. As I said, it's a Tassie thing. I'll give the guy a ring today and organise to go out there and have a look.

Vanders & cb john,
I suppose the two of you might be right.
We're all the same....yet we're all different, too.
For me the world is a big exciting place to investigate, and being able to communicate with gentlemen such as you, half way around the world I might add, is a privilege and a great adventure to me.
I look forward to it and proactively seek contact like this out, but for others it means almost nothing.
For some folks the world ends at the mail box at the end of their driveway, or the convenience store down at the corner, or maybe the bar in a neighboring town.
If that is one's perspective, that one's prerogative and privilege, but that is a very limited horizon from which to view life's hills and valleys.

If this owner's goal is to merely "get lucky" and find a buyer only in Tasmania, then he may have drastically shortchanged his opportunity to market his merchandise. If he never thought the possibility exists he might peddle his wares on the Australian continent, or NZ, or the Philippines, or even the UK or the US, then I guess placing a simple text ad in the local paper may make all the sense in the world.
I just feel he has severely limited his possibilities by not considering other outlets.....but maybe it is just enough effort to placate the spouse.
The more interested parties from various locations there are, the greater the chances of a sale......and a sale approaching his asking price.

Given the extreme rarity of CB's and the reality they are becoming truly collectible vehicles owned by a select few, I think taking a good long look in both directions at the end of the driveway, might pay this owner good dividends.

Regards,
Steve

Well I took a look today. The owners name is Mark and he has had the CB since 1980. It was used as a bit of a bush basher for a couple of years, but has been stored in a shed for a fair bit of time since. That's the positive.

The negative is that the floorpan is rusted out, as is the front bonnet (I always wonder whether to call the front lid a bonnet). The windscreen is missing, as were the seats and a bit of other stuff. The shed was fairly packed, so the photos are limited to a couple of angles. Here they are:

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r315/vandenbergp/100_2161.jpg

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r315/vandenbergp/100_2162.jpg

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r315/vandenbergp/100_2163.jpg

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r315/vandenbergp/100_2164.jpg

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r315/vandenbergp/100_2165.jpg

The CB obviously would require a new floorpan and a complete resto. There some panel damage too. Too far gone for me to take on, but someone may want to.

I offered to put up these pictures for Mark, and as he has a vinyard offerred me a case or two of wine if I could find a buyer. If you ring him about CB, please say Paul sent you, cause I quite like his wines (he does a magnificent Pinot). That's the extent of my involvement with the car.

Cheers,

Paul

I have to agree with CB John. I think it would need more than luck to get this one back on the road. The sell price is far toooo unrealistic given the work required for a resto.
No wonder there were no original photos but I hope it can be sold so it might live again. One good thing is that it becomes another one on the CB Register.

Paul, thanks for the pics and the effort to go look at this CB.
It really makes my mouth water that you could just ring an ad poster/owner, and take a relatively short drive and actually go see a CB!
How far away was it?
Paul you didn't mention if this had a motor in it, and if it did, if it was an F series motor.
Maybe you couldn't get close enough in the tight shed to tell.
If it was an F series, maybe it gives this some redeeming value if it is not trashed.
Wonder how long it has been since this car ran?

John should know better than almost anyone the effort required to rebuild a CB, and this one certainly looks like it fits that mold.
From the pics John, can you tell if this one might be better or worse than the CB you started with?
How does this asking price compare for what you gave for your CB?
I think the average guy resurrecting this car back to roadworthy condition is not likely to happen.
It would take someone with cb john's great metal working skills and equipment to be make it a success......and of course, a ton of money and time to burn.

I have to wonder what happened to all sorts of random parts....the seats, the steering wheel, the gearshift lever, pedal cluster, the windshield w/the wiper motor, etc. Those are the parts I see missing from a quick once over of the car.
How does one "lose" those parts? Maybe some stuff has been sold from it in the past.....some previous "parting out", so to speak.
What's up with the gas tank in the back?

I don't doubt the car has some value, but given it appears it has had a very hard life and pull away well worn (from the pics).
While I can fully understand and appreciate the interest in the wine incentive for a sale arrangement, I too feel way too much is being asked for this one given the condition it appears to be in.
As I recall, Pault's CB was purchased for about $4000 AUS, and was really a cream puff.....not perfect, but generally in excellent condition and basically complete.
So when you compare this Tassie CB with Pault's, I imagine the seller Mark will be sitting on this one for a very long time.. I only hope it doesn't wind up in the crusher. It has value as a parts car certainly (running gear, possibly body sections), but the price will have to come down appreciably to justify a sales transaction.

As Bill said, it's another one for the Register, and that's a good thing.
:tu:
Thanks to the internet and the information age and the possibilities afforded us for communication worldwide, hopefully we will continue to discover more CB's out there in the hinterlands.

Regards,
Steve

Hi Steve,
this buggy is about as bad as mine, with the little difference, that mine has the tunnel and basic backbone still OK.As I can tell from the pictures, everything is badly rusted , mainly cavities between the panels , since buggies had no rust protection from factory.
The price can not be compared, I did get mine for next to nothing...another question is how much extra will be the transport of carcus from Tasmania..

Thanks Steve. The CB is about a 40 minute drive from Launceston at Deviot on the Tamar River. Some of the most magnificent scenery in all Tassie. I love this part of Tas. The owner is an ex-yank, and a funny sort of guy. I've run into him at a few parties over the years and he's an eccentric character. He has a vineyard on the river and it is a beautiful setting, I got married there 12 years ago (my first marriage) and he remembered me (well he says he did). Anyway back to the CB.

I didn't get a get a good look at the motor, but I could see the air cleaner assembly which looked original. The floorpan was completely rusted out, but most panels looked okay. I asked him about the missing bits and he said he didn't jave them. I think the CB had a fairly hard life at the hands of his son around the property before it was sheded.

The owner was fairly cluey about CB's. He knew it was 'rare', and that there were two others in Tas, inc the prototype. I don't think it will go to the crushers. The price is inflated because he knows that some VW's like splitties are getting ridiculous prices. I think he was testing the waters with his local advert, and was planning to do a wider-ranging ad if there wasn't any local interest.

Trouble is, he is only going to have a limited market. 'Everyone' wants a splittie at the moment, and are buying vehicles in worse condition than this, but there is not the same buyer base for a CB in the same condition. I think he's being very optimistic with his price. If it was half that being asked he might get some genuine interest.

Transport costs from Tassie are difficult to estimate. The cheapest way is to find someone with an empty trailer bringing a car back from the mainland. This is not so common as cars seem to be leaving Tassie faster than they are coming in. One of the drawbacks of selling a car on ebay from Tassie.

Glad I could be of some help.

Cheers,

Paul

Paul, thanks for your trouble to go and see..To the splittie situation - there are places producing repair sections of the panels or complete repro panels, they are available and not extremely expensive, so restoring the splitty is somehow easier. There is nothing available for CB except for my repro panels and since it is - one off - production, the price is accordingly high. Some people accused me of ripping of vulnerable CB owners already...perhaps they should make some....

Paul,
I'm going to digress a bit and hijack this thread a little.
Your comments about the seller who is an ex-yank who is an "eccentric character" raising grapes and producing wine in Tasmania peaked my curiosity a bit.
I can't imagine such a fellow! ;)
I am intrigued how this came to pass......he must have an interesting life story of how he landed in Tasmania.

I Googled around to find out a little more....discovered where Deviot and the Tamar Valley is in relation to the rest of the island.
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Deviot,+TAS,+Australia&sa=X&oi=map&...
http://www.touringtasmania.info/tamar_valley.htm
I am amazed that wine making appears to be a pretty sizable pursuit in Tasmania.
http://www.touringtasmania.info/wine_route.htm
My research revealed there are 29 vineyards in the Launceston and Tamar Valley region.
http://www.discovertasmania.com/activities__and__attractions/food__and__wine/...
Two are listed in Deviot:
Iron Pot Wines & Marions Vineyard
The owner's name at Marions is Mark Semmens, Foreshore Drive, Deviot, Tasmania 7275
I'm guessing this is the owner of the CB.
Paul, is my research correct?

Bill,
Well it is the dead of winter here, and I do mean winter.....lest you forget that in the midst of the summer climate you now are enjoying.
We had about 7 inches of snow last weekend preceded by several hours of freezing rain which resulted in about a 3/8 " layer of ice under the snow, so this time of year provides lots of good excuses to stay inside.
Actually it didn't take me long at all to dig that info up, and being the curious and inquisitive guy I am (as you know), one bit of research led me to another piece of information. For me it is fun and a good learning and mental exercise.
There is an amazing wealth of information about Tasmania on the net, and several of those sites are state run sites.
When I stumbled across info on agriculture, and in particular vineyards and wine making, it was pretty easy to deduce where this CB was located.

If you are interested in communicating with the owner about his CB and The Register..................I even gleaned an email address for him!
;-)
Just email me privately and I'll forward it to you.

Regards,
Steve (Sherlock)

p.s. get your move and house remodeling done yet so you can go back to working on your VW's???

Given previous discussions about the asking price for the Deviot CB owned by Mark Semmens as seen and photgraphed by Vanders, I thought this might be of some interest, especially to Aussies.
This is an Australian company who assigns values to autos in Australia.
Even though Mark's CB is rare, it is missing lots of its OEM equipment and is in rather poor shape.
In my opinion it couldn't even be assigned a Condition 3 classification base on Unique Cars and Parts criteria.

If Mark at Marion's Vineyard seriously wants to sell this vehicle, he is going to have to come down from the clouds.
He's asking a Condition 1 price for something that doesn't likely qualify for Condition 3 in Oz under Unique's system.

COUNTRY BUGGY 1967-68 $800 $3,300 $5,500

http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/price_guide.htm

CONDITION 1

BODYWORK: Should be free of dents, rust or obvious repairs. Minor stone chips are permissible although major blemishes or mismatched paintwork is not. Bright work must be complete and basically undamaged.

INTERIOR: Seats should be covered in original-pattern material, free of rips or other damage. The floor covering must be complete, clean and correct material. The headlining should be clean and the dash - especially where timber or veneer used - free of cracks or discolouration.

ENGINE BAY: Should be clean with no discolouration due to water, oil or battery leaks. No engine or fuel system leaks. The correct engine or one which was optional to the model should be fitted. Original components are a must if the car is to be upgraded to 'concourse' standard.

UNDERBODY: No dents or damage to the underseal, exhaust system complete and undamaged, no oil leaks from the differential, transmission or shock absorbers. Suspension components should be in good order.

WHEELS/TYRES: Original wheels with correct hubcaps or after-market wheels in keeping with vehicle style and age should be fitted. Tyres need to be correct size and speed rating with at least 50% of original tread depth.

CONDITION 2

BODYWORK: No serious rust or large areas of body filler evident. Minor bubbling in non-structural areas is permissible. Paint should be good-quality but may show evidence of repairs, chips and scratches. Bright work should be generally good, although areas of dulled or scratched chrome are likely.

INTERIOR: Seats may have been recovered but should be in good general condition. If trim is original, areas of wear and broken stitching are likely. Floor-covering should be complete. Carpets and hood lining should preferably be in the original pattern. Cleaning may be required.

ENGINE BAY: Engine should be of original type although original motor is unlikely. No major fluid leaks or discolouration. Cleaning will be required.

UNDERBODY: No serious damage however scrapes and chipping likely. Minor oil leaks are common, exhaust should be complete and free from holes or burning around joints. Suspension components such as king-pins, ball joints and shock absorbers need to be in roadworthy condition.

WHEELS & TYRES: Wheels should be original or legal-size after-market units. Tyres should have legal tread depth.

CONDITION 3

BODYWORK: Moderate rust is inevitable, although chassis firewall and other structural areas should be sound. Minor body damage is common. Paint is likely to be faded with uneven colour. Body filler usually found in panels but unacceptable in structural areas. Bright work should be basically complete and major components like the grille must be fitted. Re-chroming or polishing of most parts will be required.

INTERIOR: Seats need to be structurally sound but will normally need recovering. Floor coverings are likely to be damaged or missing. Door-trims should be fitted but may need replacement. Vinyl dash tops usually cracked or warped.

ENGINE BAY: Engine should run but work will be needed. Engine bay is likely to be dirty and oil-stained. Hoses and fuel lines may need replacement for vehicle to be reliable.

UNDERBODY: Will show signs of neglect and damage (dents, stone damage etc) but should be free of major rust. Chassis/structural members need to be straight. Suspension components and exhaust will usually need replacement.

WHEELS/TYRES: Wheels should be free of major damage, tyres will normally need replacement.
Vehicles which are in genuine 'concourse' condition will be in completely original condition, or the subjects of a total rebuild to the highest standards. In most cases they are better than when new. Some cleaning and replacement of minor components may be required, but anything more than minor blemishes will significantly reduce the car's chances of success. Cars with the potential to achieve the coveted 'Gold' standard, (90% or better), in open concourse judging can cost 50% more than 'Condition One' examples.

Hi Greg.
So what was Mark's reaction when he saw yours in a restored condition?
He was really asking $7500 for his CB???
That's unbelievable.
Sure it has value, but being an incomplete car and missing lots of original bits and pieces as it is being shown, I can't imagine he'll get what he's asking for it even now.
No way.
Your CB is a real cream puff however, so maybe he's got big ideas about what his is worth.
Regards,
Steve

p.s. I found the vineyard's web site.
http://www.marionsvineyard.com/index.html
It looks like a totally fascinating pastoral setting.
Obviously there is a lot more than wine production going on there!

Hi Steve, didn't seem to bother him that mine was resto'd still asking same price back then, just dropped down recently. To me at the time valued at roughly 6-700 bucks, no more as too much missing and rear guards cut up for wide rims. Was used in the vineyard for many years as gp vehicle. cheers, Greg

So an eccentric American asking unrealistic prices ffor this CB, Nothing i haven't seen but if they would let this CB go much cheaper to a restorer say about $1000, maybe $500 depending on the shit you talk and get that thing out of the barn to clear up shed space for them and to save a Rar-ish CB.

It's like i know of a 56 Oval, have done since i was knee-height to Grasshoppers. It has sat in the same spot for 10-15years, never moved as it has been boxed in by a shitload of other cars. Its just sitting there with the grass growing high around it. He doesn't seem to care as he has sooooo many other cars he will restore too. (Type3's, Porsche 914, Volvo's, Audi Fox's and several of each. His house has smashed windows and the roof looks like it's caved in and worst part, he lives just up the road from me so when i go for a bike-ride i see all those cars and picture the little Oval sitting there, rustin away. Its a shame so buggger you these characters who want to much for Poo-Mobils and bugger you people who will let a half decent rar-ish VW rust away.

Grrrr....... Greg is right, "They are still there, just have faith you'll find one."
