T25 mid mount?
Hey all, ive got a transporter that ive almost finished fitting a ej22 into but now im having second thoughts about the conversion. I tow a ski boat
most weekends with a friends car but soon i will have to start using mine and dont think the ej22 and the transporter 5 speed will be up to the job. I
need a car that can tow but dont want to sell my van so..
Would it be posable to mid mount a holden 5L and auto box into my van? I was thinking of using a late model commodore irs diff in the rear with the
auto box conected straight to it, so i would have no tail shaft. A mate of mine is selling a injected 5L and box which i could get for a really good
price and commodore irs diffs are cheap on ebay. Having the motor mid mounted would also leave me lots of room to fit a LPG tank where my vw motor
used to be. I know this would be a big conversion but my van would be the ultimate tow rig once finished. My other option is buy a v8 commodore to tow
with but that really wouldnt sute my style lol.

Its possible but it'll never be legal
you'd be surprised what a transporter/kombi can pull due to their low gearing. I used to tow my skid car (VB commodore)
+ car trailer behind a 74 bay with a rough old 1700 motor. Wasn't the quickest thing on the road but it pulled the load no problem. I'd try towing
with the subie motor before you go hacking up the back of your van.

You'll be surprised what your EJ22/5speed set-up will tow.... I'd stick with that for now and try it out.... If its not doing it for you, then check
your options.... An as for the weak link 5 speed.... Its not wholly true.... A lot of the excepted 091/002 transaxle mods will work in your trans, and
there are a few option with the OG ratio selections... To find out what trans your actually has, go to the BRICKYARD for more info... http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpecific/T3/info/gbx.htm
I have the same set-up in my bus (but mines EG33 powered)... I'll be giving it a shot before I look at upgrades...
Best of luck with it....

I was also thinking about the mid mount subi idea. Im just not sure how it would go with towing? The main reason im thinking of mid mounting is to get
a tough gear box and diff. I tend to do things a bit "over kill" and the thought of having a vw box that might give up while towing will drive me
crazy lol. The van is off the road at the moment so i figure i may as well do it right this first time. The main problem with the V8 idea is the
amount of interior space in the van it will take up. Im now looking at using a T400 auto box thats been modified for marine use as it is much shorter
than a normal one. This way i can get the motor just a bit further back in the van and hopefully still have room to mount my middle row of seats.
Another problem i thought of will be geting the motor and box in and out of the car. Being in the middle of a van it would be hard to lift out with a
engine crane. Im thinking i might make up a frame that the motor and box are mounted to that is then bolted into the van from the underside. This way
if the motor and box needs to come out i can drop it straight out the bottom.

modern holdens with irs have a rear subframe and a frame to support the engine which would make it easier to some extent to graft these in and make
removable. would probably have to lose the torsion tube and use the holden suspension but your model doesn't have torsion bars does it?

Yeah, my van has coil springs. So i dont have to worry about a torsion tube being in the way.
