offroad buggy carb problem
hey all, i just bought an offroad buggy which is a beetle floorpan shortened with a custom roll cage and a 1600 type three motor in it. motor was
seized but i have fixed that and its working perfectly now all except the carbi's. i dont actually know how to tune them. any help? they are working
but its idling fast. and the idle arms arent actually touching the idle adjusting screw.

there may be a lip inside the carb from it sitting so long ,will the mechanism touch the screw with a little force ?

linkage adjustment required.
I'm sure someone will have a link to a carb set up web page. I cant type that much info in one lifetime!

cool...all i gotta do is find that person...buggy runs fine all i have to do is sort the idle problem out...i would have a go at it myself...but if i
do something wrong i will propably end up doing more damage

Are the arms touching the stops on one side, or neither side?
If it's neither side then a bigger linkage return spring may be the easy fix.

oh... ok well the springs are pretty poor and weak. but the little adjusting arms on the side are loose as well.. i tightened the lock nuts but i dont
know if each side is the same...is it as easy as measuring up the same each side? and locking them off?

I think I need pics to know what screws you are talking about.
The idle arms won't touch the screws for a few reasons.
1 - the return springs are weak / broken / missing.
2 - the throttle cable it too short.
3 - the linkage is badly adjusted so only 1 can close while the other carb is still slightly open
4 - the linkage is fine, but some other problem has causes a fast idle which someone has tried to cure by backing out the stop screws (which don't
help when the carbs are closed).
4 is possible for you. Do the butterflies look closed? Can you close them and make the screws touch?
Do the carbs have an idle speed screw which is seperate from the throttle stop screw like a stock type 1 carb? On a stock type 1 carb the throttle
stop screw should normally have a slight clearance / just be touching, while the idle speed screw sets the idle speed.
I can't remember what a type 3 carb looks like. Kadrons idle speed is set by the throttle stop screw, type 1 carbs are set by the idle speed (volume)
screw.
If the idle is still too high you probably have an air leak in the intake system. This is normally caused by a leak between the manifold and the head.
Spray WD40 around the intake gaskets while it is idling and listen to see if the idle drops at all. If the heads are cracked you will also have an
incurable air leak in the head itself making it impossible to get a perfect idle tune.
