Dumone,

Im doing an ej20T conversion to my 71 super bug, I want to see the layout of the cage, where it comes down the front near the dash, and the rear onto the guards, front and rear mounting points, weather I buy one from bond or bend one myself. Does it effect the rear seat use? How easy it is to get in with the body still on.

If you could hunt around for those pics it would be handy.

Cheers.

here's some old ones. i have to get it out again for some changes soon, so could get more pics then.

yes they do go in and out with the body on, under an hour or two with some practice....

there are several different angles in the hoop and front pieces....

Now the legs in the cage go to the wheel arches and you will also notice in Heath's car (the yellow one) that there is also a cross brace. The muffs are now double drilled and there are more provisions for extra bolts to mount the main hoop. Also the construction is steel. With the cross brace in it is hard to get in the back. Bond do have side intrusion bars as well complete with bends in them so they clear your race seat. I have found that the front legs could go a little closer to the dash as being a bit larger than most the extra few inches space between seat and cage would allow easier ingress and egress.

Sorry I can't show you a picture of ours as I don't have a digital camera.

BTW, if you want it to be cams reged for a log book, it needs to be steel now...as I understand it.

Also half cages now won't pass for CAMS, so if the car is for competition make sure you check out what the latest rules say....http://www.camsmanual.com.au/pdf/general/0611_Schedule_J_Q208.pdf

I'm kinda paranoid about following rules, so when I built Jezebel just to be sure I had the cage done by a guy who certifies for both CAMS and Queensland Transport (since I need road-legal still). Excellent result, but definitely not a cheap way to go...

Of course if the car isn't for competition, then a bolt-in half cage is going to be a lot safer than no cage at all !!!

there is a guy in sydney still engineering cages with front legs.
must be tucked up as far as possible.
cams or andra doesn't matter.i think he is one of the last doing it.
i don't have his number but his name is Cole Pots.we are doing a cage for a customer at the moment.
he is very picky in who's cages he will certify,i know of a few other guy's that do cages that he will not even look at.
i had to send him pic's of our quality of welds and fab of the cage .and they have to be well hidden up and tucked away before he will even tink about it.
no way a bond cage would pass for street.no offense alex.but they are mad to fit easy .not work well.

Does anyone apart from Bond offer a mail-order/DIY bolt-in cage?

and can someone provide clarification to the CAMS regs regarding definition of 'bodyshell'. Does this include the floorpan, in relation to VWs?

when u say bolt in ,u mean close enough is good enough ,no one is doing anything other than bondi, when you say cams u must mean super sprints.
yes we could do them, but we don't like bolt in.safety wise,we don't risk our lifes with bolt in so why should you.
i don't mean to be rude, but you only get one shot at life, why risk it.
that's me having my 2 cents worth.
i have seen cages that have come from all around the world that are suposed to be bolt in,none are that simple.
thay all need to be played with and none are perfect.

what I meant was... 'bolt-in' (I wish to drill the holes and install) and built in accordance with the new-for-2009 CAMS regs, and not for street rego/engineering. Bond has done it for years, I thought if someone else may have jigged up to provide a similar product, I'd take a look

nah, most people can't sleep if they sell product like that.sorry for sounding rude, but lay one of his cages out on the floor and check all the bends, none will be bent the same degree's.and you will have to make all the compression tubes for the bolts to go through the cage and he will supply plates for the floor.
it is not a full kit.
if you are not worried about street rego or engineering why not weld in.
cams are getting pretty strick on the bolt in stuff.they are checking for compresion tubes fitted to bolts and floor plates have the right surface area .
i can bend you up what you need but the install is the most important part.for your own safety at least pop down and let me show you what to look for.

I think the cage that Rod Richardson got made for his 61 cost like $2k. Could be wrong but it is a full cage and all chrome moly. Passes Andra's criteria for drag racing.
