1500 beetle mirror question

Recently I found some of my old spare parts for my '70 1500 and I remembered when I bought the car a few years ago, that there was no driver's side mirror.

There was a cap in place in the hole. I checked out that cap and it is a geniune vw plug.

I am wondering, did vw ever sell these beetle's without door mirrors?

Thanks
-Rob

the 68-76 bugs had chrome mirror on the drivers door only
but from 72 the mount was also fitted to the passenger door but wasnt fitted from the factory with a mirror so they had the plug u found in it
someone has prob put a passenger side plug in it to fit those ugly aftermarket baby turbo mirrors at one stage
