WTD Type 3 brake calipers 68-71

Hi peoples

I am looking for 2 Type 3 front brake calipers from 68-71 with the small mounting bracket As the ones I keep from my giveaway day are u/s.

I pulled them apart today and the body's are cracked where the piston runs.

So if anyone has one or two the want to sell please let me know.

Thanks
Marc

If you get stuck the early type 3 is the same as bug caliper,
only the bug has a smaller piston I think.

I heard you can still buy new ones that are quite affordable.

Hi

All model Type 3s both small & large bolt pattern use 42 mm pistons, bugs use 40mm.

How many threads on the early bolts Steve?

Steve amazes me how you know all this crap  Thank God, cause I dont and need tech advice all the time.

Marc, postage as Craig said is only about $15 from Syd so as they get harder to find might be worth grabbing them.

Hi

Used to work in VW spare parts about 30 years ago, I can still recite some VW part numbers from memory.

The early Type 3 callipers had the same bolt spacing as all Beetles & Ghias and used M10 bolts (17mm head), the later Type 3 callipers were from Type 4s (411/412) and 914 Porsches and had M12 bolts (19mm head). The late Type 3 callipers had a slightly wider bolt spacing and used a larger brake pad.

I fitted the early Type 3 callipers to my daily driver bug and they give better stopping with the larger piston and pad, they use the same pad as a 1972 Superbug, twin pin. The Beetle calliper has 2 bleed nipples, the early Type 3 has 1 only at the top.

IF you have an early Type 3 a good upgrade is to fit later Type 3 stub axles, callipers & rotors. Late Type 3s used a special 411/412 rotor, but I'm not sure if these are still available.
