question on a bug

Hey,
A guy was telling me about his bug he has.
He described it as
possibly a 68
cream in colour
has no clutch pedal as auto
1600 motor.
is not a super bug shape.

Do you think he has got the year ?
as it sounds like it would be an Lbug to me. I don't really have a clue about these things so could be completely wrong.

Easy spotting..

Floss,
"L" bugs (supers) have curved windshields. 68-72 standard and super beetles have a flat windscreen. Dunno what a post '72 standard has.

As Joel said, most semi-auto's are 68-70. I have seen 1 post 73 model semi-auto for sale in Australia in the last 3 years.

A VIN number (under the back seat, stamped in front of the tunnel inspection plate) will reveal more, or post a pic pls.

BTW...tell him to sign up on http://www.vwar.org  !!

Enjoy

Hi

There was semi auto 1303 at the VW Nationals many years ago, it was owned by VW executive and the car had survived Cyclone Tracy, the only one I have seen.

Here is a little known fact about semi auto Beetles, up until 1972 they had no park position, so if you broke a hand brake cable the car would roll away, the 1973 model (1303) has a park position to lock the transmission.

like i said not many S/L superbugs semi autos sold
alot of ppl brought them when they first came out so theres a fair few 68-70 1500s around
but there pretty tradgic economy wise especially on the highway and accelaration leaves a bit to be desired
my best mate has had 2 1500s, but i've seen 1 semi auto Lbug in my time and steve is spot on the money they have a "P" position next to reverse from memory altho i have driven a late 72 Sbug that had this as well
afaik semi auto was dropped in late 74
theyre great while they still work well but can be a real nightmare once they start playing up
most get converted to manual
late 70 onwards already has the clutch cable conduit installed

Hi

I have friend who is a paraplegic, he has 3 1500 Beetle semi autos. He rallies one of them and doesn't have too many dramas reliability wise. At the moment hes running a 1916 with dual mm webbers etc.

Steve

PS is him getting a bit sideways,
