resurrecting an old beetle
Hi peoples
Im going to check out a 67 deluxe beetle tomorrow and the engine hasnt been turned over in 3 years!. the owner reckons that it was reconditioned 1
year before it was put in storage. The question is, is there a safe way to turn the engine over with out causing any damage, and what should i look
for?. If the body is solid ill probably buy it as im after a long term project, i would rather not drive it home if it would cause any potential
damage .

Hi Himmel, there was a good post about this, back in the tech area.
As a minimum you would want to change the oil and the fuel. Check the air filter and clean if its a oil bath type. Also take out the spark plugs and
crank the engine over on the starter motor to circulate the oil. Crank it til the oil light goes out if you can.
Put the plugs back in and fire it up. Let it run on a fast idle for a while to warm up and circulate the oil properly. If seems OK with no bangs,
knocks or smoke its probably OK to drive. Assuming it has no probs with the brakes, steering and gearbox. :thumb
If it's been sitting for a while I would be more concerned with the brakes personally. The thing with brakes is that you dont find out they dont
work until 2 seconds before slamming into the back of the car in front of you.

Thanks alot for that Grey, ill check out the other post. do you know if the 67 has any thing specifically weird to look out for that other beetle
years dont have?

Not sure about Aussie 67's. There are a few of one year only bits on Euro and US spec 67 beetles. Door handles and deck lid I think. But not sure
if this applies to Aussie built cars.
Good to see another VW bought back to life.:thumb
