Sounds good Simon.
Gee that is a really small restricion in your supply line....it makes sense though, that the ball bearing deals need very little oil flow.

Sounds like you are heading in the right direction.
Look forward to hearing what you do with the jetting.

Cheers Dave... After having seen so many fast turbo cars come out of the Hellbug Garage all those years ago, it feels good to have finally built something like this.... Not that my other performance projects haven't been fun, it's just that I have always wanted to build a car like this.... The full tilt turbo efi stroker is still in the works, but this little draw-through 'mouse motor' has been a massive learning curve...

As you say, the carb will be a challenge.... This carb was on one of Nick's previous cars I believe... Not sure to what level it has been developed, but hopefully he can shed some light on it... If it proves to be a hassle, it's not too much of stretch for me to fit efi...

Now comes the challenge to make it work....

Your right, there was plenty of smoke, but not in a good way.... Will be chucking it down the quarter in the new year... Got a lot of tuning and learning to do before then.... But when I do, you be sure to bring your Subi buddies!

Nice work man. It is always a good feeling to finally get the thing started and it makes all the right noises even with a few small glitches. Ask Troy he can sympathise with you on the smoke issue and small drama's!! He had plenty of them but the end result is well worth the effort...

Cheers for the comments guys.... Tomorrow the engine comes out and I'll tear into pulling the intake and exhaust off.... Will draw file the exhaust flanges in an attempt to fix the exhaust leaks... I have scored some CB graphite exhaust gaskets to use in place of the WBX ones I have at the moment... Also gonna have a go at the pinhole leak in the top of the 'T' manifold.... And another thing.... That bloody front seal is leaking again!!!!... Been having a real bad run with those of late... I've been using Elring FW seals for years, but for some reason I can't get a nice seal up front????

Gonna drop the rear of the car too.... Just for the show you understand... Will source some more suitable rear rubber in the new year... Anyone have some 26" slicks they want to part with?

Got a bit more done these past two days.... Chasing the leaks in the intake and exhaust.... Pulled the engine once more... Tore it all off.... Began draw-filing all the flanges yesterday.... RPITA!!!

Took the 'T' intake and complete exhaust to work today.... Re brazed the manifold and fabricated and brazed a new/larger MAP port on the intake, and linished all the flanges flat.... Gotta love industrial belt sanding tables!.... A whole lot ezr than draw-filing!!... Made two new cable clamps to connect the two accelerator cables... The last one was pain to fit...

Got home at 4.30.... Fitted one of the versions on.... Works a treat... Fitted up the complete the intake and exhaust systems and used all new hand-made gaskets and those fancy exhaust gaskets I got from one of the 'Collective'.... Re-fitted the engine and hooked it all up....

Turned the key at 7pm tonight.... Sounds much better.... Lovely note!

Noticed a few problems still....

The oil is still leaking a little from the turbo.... Fitted another restrictor at the top banjo fitting.... That's three restrictors now... The factory one (1.5mm) in the turbo cartridge, one in the top banjo (.8mm), and one (.5mm) at the main oil gallery..... Are turbo's assembled with any sealant on the mating surfaces?.... Carb is running way off.... Doesn't seem to be running on idle circuits... And it's seems to be flooding fuel (cheers for the tips Nick).... I think the floats are set incorrectly... And the accelerator pedal/linkage is cactus... Gonna rip the pedal off and make a roller pedal up using a skateboard wheel and tweak the cable support on the carb base... The cable seems to be binding a little....

Getting there....

Cheers Reub.... I'm pretty stoked with it.... I can't believe how well it all fits.... Only one thing didn't work out as planned... The waste gate actuator just touches the closed engine lid!!!!!.... So I'll make up a lower engine cover prop to make it work.... Better for cooling anyway....

Big thanks to you Nick.... I really appreciate the help you have given me.... Not to mention the inspiration... I first realised I wanted to build a car like this when I saw those pics of your old blue bug picking up its wheels in Fast Fours (I think it was Fast Fours?)... Then I got to hang out at Hellbug back in the day.... There was no hope after that!!!

Some fun video will surely make its way to youtube once I get a handle on the old girl... Stay tuned!

Today was the big day.... I took the car to school (Im a high school teacher for those that didn't know) and the machine went pretty well.... It really does run better when it warms up.... Has a stutter when its cold.... Sorta like a rev limiter but at around 2200prm... No clue what rpm yet as my laptop has a crook battery and I haven't got a tacho yet.... But once the POS warms up the stutter is all but gone.... It is running a little on the rich side, so have ordered a range of main jets... I think the stutter could also be because of the slightly rich mixture....

Also.... It starts fine, and idles well.... The idle problems I had before were mostly down to a very tight accelerator cable/linkage.... And possibly because it was all little dry and tight from lack of use.... All good there now....

Now for the ignition.... Still not sure how it is going.... As I haven't been able to do any data logging, I really have no clue if the map is even close.... I based mine on a map I found on the Autosportlabs Forum, but I reduced the initial a little... I know this is all a bit dangerous since I haven't done any logging, but what sort of things should I be aiming for when it comes to load v rpm?... Currently the 500rpm stage is set at 8, 600 at 9, 800 from 11 to 15, 1000 9 to 18 etc.... That last one looks a little odd to me... 9 seems wrong given that at 800rpm, the advance is at 11 for load point 10 and 20... I'm prolly not making myself clear here, but I hope you guys can steer me right....

In closing.... It's got some poke! :D

What size is the exhaust? Is it loud when you open it up?
Cool trigger. I have seen a similar thing off a new FG Falcon mated to VW stuff.
Very Cool.

Hahhaa.... Cheers guys.....

The exhaust primaries are 1 5/8 merging into a much modified 2.5" collector.... The dump and muffler is 3" all the way.... Its pretty tame and mello at idle and cruising, but it does have a nice note when the revs come up... So I've been told.... I don't know for sure what it actually sounds like, cause I'm driving, there's no interior and the drivetrain is solid mounted!!!! As for the ignition... It is in fact a Ford item (US/Europe 80-90's Escorts).... Some Oz spec Fords used a similar system.... As far as I can tell, only the timing wheel and the VR sensor are the same.... All the other parts need to be source OS.... You can get the complete EDIS4 system used on ebay for less than 100bux!!!!.... The brain that drives it is Megajolt unit that I bought in kit form.... Its an awesome little project by itself!.... And the spark is amazing!

And don't worry Fish.... As soon as I get a handle on the tune, I will be posting another flick on the tube.

Wow its been a longtime since an update.... Loads has happened in these past weeks.... Got the POS going in late November.... Been having a blast ever since.... Still got loads to do.... Working the tune, making changes and all that stuff..... But here's a little vid of the start up....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-58dK5FQLY

Got it all together just in time for the DoVW-WA.... Had over 20 VW's turn up at my place for the drive out to the show.... Here's a video I made of the day....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2fNuNFrDo0

As I said earlier.... The tune is way off, but it getting ever closer.... The ignition is awesome... The car starts so easily it amazing!!!!... Cruising is a little rough, which I think is down to a few things... too lean on the pump jets and way rich on the mains, and I'm pretty sure my ignition map is not right.... To help with it all I have just bought one of these....

http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/products/images/DBkit_dual_700.jpg

http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/products/db.php

Should be here in the next week or so...

And a new battery for the laptop.... So real datalogging can commence... Best guess tuning is not a good idea!!!

Still waiting on the jets and emulsion tubes (turbo modified)....

http://images.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/pix/2813476.jpg

And then the fun will really start.....Slowly, slowly....
