Saturday arvo and just destroyed the gasket on the carb. is it nesessary to fit a paper(?) gasket or can it be done with one of those liquid gasket materials? ie, do I have to wait till Monday to get her going again?

yep, nope and yep if the top gasket, if its the one between carb and manifold ,get some gasket paper and make one
