Type 3 Auto part numbers & years

OK,
A questions for the type 3 techo's (or some one with a good reference book)
Trying to figure what a couple of auto gear boxes belong to.
First one, auto: 003 321 105 A, Diff: 003 507 111
Second, auto: 3 003 321 105 D, Diff: 003 507 111 A
What do they belong to?

There are a number of difference between them. Are they all interchangeable?
Is there any truth in the rumour they are the same as a kombi auto?

Any way to judge condition without sticking it in a car and giving it a run?

from the pics they both look like type 3 autos and should be interchangable

the 003 refers to the type of auto which is also fitted to several other vehicles

Cheers Dave,
I don't have part number cross refereces, so was hoping some one would.
The are quite a few differences between them, especially if you look at the diff/bell housing. The back one has different/extra mount points. That's why I was wondering if they were used in a kombi or something??

I'm guessing from the revision numbers the A version must be early ('69??) and the D version later ('72??)

Auto GB numbers for the 411 are 003 321 101 * , so there must be some differences to the 411.

Kombi boxes are not the same, not sure in what way but when we first got the fastie was looking at putting a Kombi auto into it I spoke to a top VW mechanic and was told they will fit but will need a bit of adlusting to do so.

You need the serial number which is on the web on the underside of the diff housing(Type 3&4)
Type 3 EA,EB,EJ
Type 4 EC,EE,EF,EH
Type 2 NA,NB,NC,ND

Front one is an early type 3, without the extra bellhousing mounts and it has the flange around the driveshafts on the diffhousing. The bellhousing mounts were only used on the early type 4's as far as I have been able to discover. You will find these mounts are not tapped out on the type 3 bellhousings

OK,
despite they are both very different, they both have numbers starting EA on the flange which seems strange.
The picture in my type 4 parts book shows the auto bell housing without the "extra mounts", but has mounts at the bottom of the bell housing like a beetle!!
Type 4 diff part numbers 003 507 105*

EA - 1.6 litre - 54bhp, twin-carb engine code letter (T) '68 & '69 from august 1967
Final Drive 9:33/3.67

The serial # has more to do with the automatic section than the diff/bellhousing (I don't know why it isn't on the auto section rather than the diff)
