Offroad frame racer finished!


Thought id show you guys and girls the "rip off" buggy.
Brought it last year with a lot of rust in the pipe chassis. I often wonder what i actually paid for considering how much new pipe went into it:lol:

Runs a 1800 and kombi box.
Was a sportmans class racer in its day so far as i know.
Ive set it up for mucking around on bush tracks so its sits pretty high, 43cm under the motor.
Have to fit the harnesses, skid pan and rear shocks tomorrow then it's going out to Roma for a weekend of fun on a mates property.

Looks like a bit like an old Rivmasta, like mine - got any other pics showing 3/4 or side profiles which may help in identifying it a bit more. Judging by the number on rthe bonnet (assuming that's a true old competition number and not something someone judge stuck on there), and given the 1800, it would've been a Class 1 - and the 1800 would now make it a Pro-Lite, not a Sportsman (olld class 6) which can only run resticted 1600s.

Ill put up some day time photos soon. My camera doesnt take very good night time shots.
Thanks for the info Kimbo, i dont plan on entering any races in this one, its just for fun.
Now that ive been through the process i probably will start from scratch with a particular class in mind (wife permitting:lol:)

LOL - wife permitting, yep, I know what you mean there !!

Mind you, having said that, mine actually encouraged me to buy the one that I've currently got, after watching me attempt to rebuild one (and getting increasingly frustrated) over the preceeding 3-4 years. But, I'm glad I spent the time ripping the old one apart as it gave me a much better appreciation of what I wanted/needed in the current one.

After testing at a mates property at Roma a few things need adjusted/changed.
So plans include a donaldson air cleaner, move the battery box to allow more passenger leg room, spare wheel mount, spot lights and a mesh cover over the engine air intake to stop dirt/rocks and grass getting in the motor.
Was a lot of fun! Had it in 4th flat out on a dirt road which must equate to well over a 100km/hr, felt a lot faster :lol:
Next trip will be to black duck park but i dont know if they have much flat tracks.

Sorry BB, led you up the wrong path there mate, it's not a Rivmasta - it's not long enough. The type of Riv that I was thinking about has a couple of different sets of fibreglass panels, with slightly different shapes for the bonnet, and the perspective of the first photos made it look very similar, but side on, I'm afraid yours has completely different proportions, and unfortunately I can't help you any more with identifying it - although if it was an actual racer it would've had a CAMS log book which should give some more info about it's history

However, that aside looks like you've got a good buy there - although maybe it doesn't feel that way given the amount of tube work you say you've had to replace - but have fun anyway. Shifting the battery box (presumably forwards) will give you more room, but beware it can also upset the weight distribution quite a bit, which will change the "jumping" characteristics and make it land differently, although you maybe won't notice the difference so much when it comes to handling on the flat.

Babies got new feet!!
Micky thompson baja belted. 29*10 and 19*7 from memory. Put on a new front end which is adjustable and has about 50mm lift in the hubs. i think they are off a country buggy but someone may know more. Disc brake, narrow five stud pattern and kombi size spindles.
got some spotties on so i can stay out longer on the tracks but still have to fit a spare and proper air cleaner.

Buggy was a Pre Cobra Custom Offroad Unit, made bt George Croucher back in the 80's.

Looks a little better than when I last saw it, well done.

Afte a brief hiatus from the buggy (I was buildign a V8 HQ mud racer for the Roma mud trials :crazy:) I'm back into the buggy.
Thought I'd post up some info to keep me motivated.
I have just fit a new HD racing clutch and am in the process of organising a oil cooler/filter set up.
Fit a donaldson ages ago which works well.
I'm looking at reconfiguring the pedal mechanisms for the brakes and the clutch as i dont feel i have adequate leverage (they are not VW) I'm looking at using the pedal assembly out of a HQ.
Also the cutting brake needs to go in still, I,m weighing up between using the handbrake cables versus a hydrualic unit i have.
I'll post some pics soon.
