EJ22 to EJ20T
hey people
am chasing info on changing my EJ22 powered dualcab to EJ20T.
i have been told the computers are different but are the plugs for the ECU different? what extra wires are in the EJ20T engine ECU that would be
different? the adapter and flywheel the same? any other info i might need to know?
cheers

Your adaptor, flywheel and clutch will be ok. With the electrics, grab a ecu pinout chart for each and compare. I think you will have to relocate some
pins in the plugs.
Also consider where the turbo and intercooler is on a EJ20T. If your fuel tank is in the stock location and you want to keep the motor stock they will
clash. You will have to move one or the other. I moved the tank. I you want to move the turbo a PWR cylindrical water to air intercooler is the go.
Check out VWRX synchro conversion on the web. It shows this type of relocation.

Hi Rhys, I am wiring up my EJ20T using an EJ22 loom (couldnt find any ej20T looms at the time). They are very very similar, only difference is that
the ej20t loom has a few extra wires (4 coils instead of two, pressure sensor and wastegate solenoids). I have compared the ECU pinouts in the wiring
diagrams and my loom and they are exactly the same. The ECU's are physically the same with the same plugs, but you will need the different ECU as it
will have different software. Just make sure you get the same model series.
Adaptor and flywheel will be the same.

My intercooler and turbo are in the stock location although I am using a Liberty water to air unit. My intercooler radiator is above and next to the
starter motor and the circulating pump is where the battery use to be. This gives the right level so that the system does not need priming.

so with the fitting of EJ20T heads and pistons to a EJ22 lowering the comp ratio you can turbo a EJ22? obviously the exhaust flanges are the same for
the turbo pipes etc?
sounds good in theory but still have to find a EJ20T heads and pistons and turbo setup and then do it all or just buy a EJ20T complete and do a few
mods (bigger high flowed turbo, wind upo the boost, bigger intercooler) and achieve a good 200rwkw?
food for thought though!! how do u reacon the EJ22 internels (crank etc) would handle being turbod?
cheers

Hi
You can tee off the oil pressure switch like most after market turbo systems do.

I used an NA 2.5 block I got for free and fitted USDM 2.5T pistons and rods I got new for $200. These pistons/rods were removed from one of the US
2.5turbo blocks that are being sold new here for $3k. The owner wanted to fit full forged pistons so he could run huge boost. Fitted my WRX heads and
turbo etc. I'm only running lowish boost.

peter did you change pistons to get lower compression? stronger rods obviously. I only want to add minimum boost to my EJ22 cos its in a kombi...an
extra 30 -40 HP would be fun

The US domestic STI 2.5 turbo pistons are stronger, and cheap! I think I ended up with an 8.5:1 comp? Cometic gaskets come in various thicknesses to
get the correct comp. Check with your local Subaru performance engine builder and you might uncover some cheap new USDM pistons.
