Yes,
these are one of My favorite VWs..
probably My favorite... I love em..

they had a beetle engine in the rear..

I have seen pics of the 4 door version too...

funnily enough, 2 door cars are the biggest sellers in Brasil
so there weren't many 4 door Brasillias made...

cheers

Yep, they were very nice cars, shrunk type 4 body strapped o a type 3 floor pan. I think they would have done well in other markets also, the only 4 door wagon VW made with an air cooled engine!
Very nice.
What year is this one, looks like a late model to me.

Brasilias as far as i know were only produced in two doors..
and were on a BEETLE chassis with a beetle rear engine..

they had the the same nose as a 412...
deseigned by the same person...

I think they would have sold well Everywhere as a replacement for the beetle....
Rear engine - Good looking - Beetle chassis etc....
EXCELLENT....

cheers

The ONLY 4 door VW I now was the 411-412 VW..
made in Germany...
No chassis - excellent type 4 engines -
late model designed suspension etc....

LEE

I love the 412...

http://www.geocities.com/vw_brasilia/us_brasilia74-eng.jpg

The Brasilia was indeed made with 4 doors, although the 2 door was way more popular. Lots of 4 door Brasilias were bought to be used as Taxis in Rio de Janeiro. And as far as which chassis/engine they had, before the Brasilia, there were cars in Brazil called TL, Variante and 1600. These had the Beetle chassis but the engine and looks were like the Type 3.

The Brasilia was made to be a substitute to the Beetle in Brazil, but it ended up being sold side by side. The Brasilia had indeed a Beetle chassis and engine but they did not have the same nose as a 412. The look was simply copied, thats why it looks similar.

Some early Brasilias had a 1300 engine but all later models had a twin carby 1600.

Here is a "what if". What if Volkswagen decided to make a new version of the Brasilia? I think it would look something like this:

What was the name of the South American VW that looked like a Polo but had an air cooled engine up front? Also the SP2 would've sold well. If only VW hadn't taken over Audi and let the tail wag the dog!! I believe there was still room for aircooled to expand.

the GOL -

I stand corrected
I have never seen a pic of a 4 door brasillia before...
Now they would have sold in Australia....

the 4 headlamp nose is known as the Leipzig nose as it was designed by this VW designer... He designed the 412 in Germany then I believe He moved to Brasil... where he designed more great VWs....

I really don't understand why the 4 door Brasillia wasn't used as a TAXI in Mexico after the law was passed that All taxis had to have 4 doors.. which killed the Beetle production....

in 1980 - VW Brasillia made the GOL - a hatchback car with front mounted air cooled engine- A totally new designed engine - ... hydraulic lifters - excellent large fan similar to the porsche style - no oil cooler - totally newly designed unitary body/chassis - FRONT WHEEL DRIVE -
and designed to run totally on ALCOHOL...

no sniffing petrol over there.... just drink the stuff??? lol

cheers

The GOL - 1980 -

BY 1986 the Gol was available with a GOLF GTI engine..
and the air cooled engines were phased out in 1987....

it was designed with a safety cell etc by VW Germany as a prototype EA276.... it was supposed to be the beetle replacement in Germany.

VW Germany refined it and then sent it to Brasil...
it was also made in Argentina...

imagine looking under the bonnet of a GOL..
looks as modern as most cars apart from that excellent engine.....

I'm still drooling.....

Most cars sold in brasil only have two doors...
4 door cars sell very poorly..... Lee

LEE

Only ever made in LHD...

Hello vw-mates
Well if you want to know more a bout VW Brasilias i'll recomend to you this site
http://www.geocities.com/vw_brasilia/  the site was made by Rafael Luis Zimmermann a friend of mine
It's in Portuguese and english, but the english version is shorter. You can find a lot of information there.
I even made a magazine review abot brasilias, but it's in spanish because it was made for "VW Venezuela magazine".
If you want I can sent it to you.
Ahhh I really do like the New Brasilia :smirk:

Ahhh and the brasilia is like a type 1 with newer chasis.
More inernal space, more lugage area, more cc in the engine and so.
But is the same mechanical.
The 4 doors brasilias where very few and there are very strange to find

Ok I did some research and here is what I came up with:

Brasília is a car that has characteristics from the Type 1 and Type 3. Basically it's a Type 3 (chassis, front axle and torsion bars, including stablizer bars), with engines out of the Type 1 (upright cooling fan). The body was designed completely in Brazil. The brazilian Volkswagen 1600 sedan (type 3 style 4 door sedan, which people in Brazil have nicknamed "Zé do Caixão", which translated means "Coffin Joe" because it's square and has 4 door handles, two on each side, which looks like a coffin) is also a mix of the Type 1 and Type 3.

The Brasílias were 1.600cc - from 1973 to 1975, with single carby (H-30-PIC); from the end of 1975 (1976 model) to 1982, with twin carbies (H-32/34PDSI-2/3). Differential ratio was 4,125:1. The exception were the Brasílias that run on acohol (ethanol) with 1.300cc engines, which also had twin carbies (H-32/34PDSI-2/3 - adjusted to run on a compression ratio of 10:1). In this case, the diff ratios were the same as on the Beetle 1300 (4,375:1), made from December 1967 to August 1983.

There has never been a Brasília 1.500cc.

Hi guys, if you want to see some 4 doors brasilia just type brasilia 4 portas at google images, there is also TL 4 portas. They were both made by VW Brasil in the 70's and early 80's. I am from Brasil and I own a 1986 ethanol Bettle there.
Nice topic
