10" rear rims
anyone in oz know of any type 1 beetles early or late running 10" rims in the rear?
if so could you please post some pics or list any details ie: suspension, body fabrication etc done.
would be greatly appreciated.
have been looking on germanlook.com and would seem few people go that wide on the rear of any beetle for obvious reasons but still....

Nick, you're not trying to compensate for a lack of width in another area are ya?

al. you promised you wouldnt say anything!
from what i can gather with the current brake setup and even with the narrowed irs arms i will have to get a at minimum a 1.5" wider rear fender or
tub it.
al you might remember a guy from germanlook (sandeep) 2.0l TIV turbo is running the same wheels im looking at 18"x10" rear twist replicas. will have
to hit him up with regards to his setup.

actually here is a funny quote from that sandeep guy that i (and im sure many others) can relate to:
"I am one step away from having my ultimate GL .. Just need to install the turbo on my T4 engine this winter. This build has taken me almost 15 years
now, through high school, university, and into a marriage now"

Yep, not to mention having to throw a $hitload of cash at it along the way (I can relate to that part!).
I quized sandeep a bit on his turbo setup when I was going to go the same way for my type IV when I had it....he was always really helpful.
I guess you have it mind already with the secret suspension setup, but just check the regulations for increase in tyre width (maybe baja wes is up to
date with it?), I know it was an issue when I had my ragtop certified. There is some ratio relative to what the 'widest rim width available at the
time of purchase' - not the exact words of course, but just check it out before you buy any wheels!

Its been a while since I've seen this car, but I'm sure those rears were at least 10". I think it had a V8 in the front.

That dub from memory was called "Munsta" an yes definitely had an 8 up front.
I've got 9's on the rear of my oval and have widen my guards by 3". The rims n rubber are about half an inch away from the suspension and run close
to the guards. No internal mods (body or suspension) have been undertaken.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Hey nick if you ever get that body to us we might be able to do some measurements and give you the answer first hand.
Oh and i hope yours is not going to be a 15 year job

Hi
I ran 9s on with rear with Aero guards which are about 2 inches wider than stock. They weren't even close on the inside, so 10s is doable.

Hey Nick, as you know i'm running 9'' on the back of my 69 pan with 944 gear. I honestly don't think I could go any bigger with this setup as I
have to run 21mm spacers to clear the calipers and to clear the swingarm. As Steve has mentioned aeros (which I'm running) are 2'' wider then
stock so my feeling is if you are running similar gear then you will need wider guards. Hopefully I'll move the car back here in a couple of week as
you are welcome to have a look.

Hi
It will depend on the ET as well. User "1303" is running 8.5 Boxtser wheels with stock guards, tight but it works, so with the right ET and 2 inch
wider guards it will work.
Before I fitted 7 inch 55 ET wheels to my daily driver 1303 I fooled around with "known fitments" on a online wheel off set calculator and added or
subtracted wheel sizes and ETs to make an educated guess at what would fit.
For example, I knew that 7 inch wheels (cookies, Fuchs etc) with a 23 ET will fit under standard rear guards, so to run a 7 inch wheel with a 55 ET I
would need 32 mm spacer to keep the wheels in same place in relation to the guard.
Fitting steel 944 trailing arms and brakes gave me 24mm which was close enough to make it work and I didn't need a spacer
I'm not sure what your version of the RTA will say about 10s though.

i saw in a previous posting by you steve that nsw rta the weight of the car had to be 1400kgs+ to run 10s?
i have to check what the go is here in qld... alan (das) thought it might be more in relation to the original specs of the car and he may well be
right. in which case i may have to move to nsw....
thanks guys.
oh - the 10's are et65. am running narrowed irs trailing arms (-~24mm?) and 944t brakes (+~24mm?)
am not wanting to go the aero look but will look into stock looking wider glassed fenders.

Hi
That weight was for a pre 73 car and with the old RTA rules, I'm not 100% sure what the go is with the new rules.
This what I've found, using the widest tyre fitted to a Beetle from a sports bug 175/70x15

The Qld rules used to state, wheel size limitations blah blah blah.....EXCEPT VOLKSWAGEN TYPE 1,2 and 3.
I am not 100% sure it still stands, but Buggy Brad suggested the Qld rules haven't changed in relation to wheels, when I spoke to him last, a few
months ago. You will make 10's fit, its just a matter of how wide you make the guards. The old carrera kits used to do it.

Casting my mind back here, but I think I recall that this wasn't actually registered as a VW, but as a kit car because of the tube chassis -
therefore different width regulations may have applied. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

oh I shoulld mention i'm running 295's out back so perhaps that is why I believe that you could not go bigger with 944 arms + ET55 cup 3's and
aeros.

Hi
I remember the time when that V8 bug turned up at the VW Nationals at Parklea, he also ran it at the drags and it wasn't as quick as you would
imagine, most of the quick bugs beat it. A friend used to live near where the car was stored in the open and out of rego, bit of a shame.

Hi
I just did some checking on a wheel offset calculation program.
So your saying that "the 10's are et65. am running narrowed irs trailing arms (-~24mm?) and 944t brakes (+~24mm?)" which means you have no increase
in wheel bolt face to wheel bolt face dimension.
A 17x8.5 Boxster wheel has a 50ET and I'm pretty sure that they end up very close to the spring plate bolts, they just need to be turned around so
that the head faces out and they just fit under standard guards.
This is what the calculator said.
