cv joint bolt remover thingy.
I want to remove my cv joints and need the socket thingy. (not the big nut on the end of the axle) My wagon is a '73 and yesterday it started to make
cluncking noises, which get faster as I get faster. I've taken the wheels and brake drums off the rear end and everything seems to turn ok with no
noises. There is the same amount of sideways movement on both axles.
I want to remove the cv's so that I can check them and also remove and repack the rear wheel bearings. So...what is the socket called and what size
is it?

Its either a 6mm Allen key (6 sides) or an M8 multihex (12 sides)
You'll need a 1/2inch socket and breaker bar to undo & retighten them

you also need to get a small screwdriver n clean all the grease n gunk out of the socket before you try to undo it
scrap all the crap out then get the right tool and give it a belt into the socket of the head of the bolt with a hammer this will make sure its
in all the way b4 u try and undo the bolts
the multi hex or 12 sided tool bits are availble from vintage in Sydney 02-9789-1777 if you aint got one
you can NOT undo a 12 sided bolt with a 6 sided hex allen key it wont work
unless your at a really good tool shop you wont get a multi 12 point allen key socket for this job

the King chrome brand will probally last a few times
if you buy a Hazet or Stalwhillie it will last a live time mine is over 30 years old and still good
when cleaning the gunk out of the heads you may find you have a mixture of bolt socket heads some 6 and some 12 point bolts so you may need both
size hex keys

Yes I bought a Kingchrome Multihex one from Auto one a few years ago..
and have used it many times...
so long as you take Dave's advice on cleaning the holes and driving the tool into the socket..
if the sockets are dirty I'm spray them with degreaser first
but Mine have always been painted green...
and nice and clean.... lol...
Re pack the CV joints with Lithium based Moly Grease..
Very Important...
I pack the CV Joint plus the boot full of Moly Grease
any brand... [Valvoline-Castrol etc]
that should lubricate the CV joints and stop the noise...
its always worked for Me on FWD cars too....
If You have the money - New Lobro CV joints
would be the way to go...

I think they were the very first things I painted, along with the ATF cap/dipstick..
I then branched out into other colours...
blue - red - yellow - grey - silver - etc
I think the reason I painted them..was that because they were so clean.. they could be painted..
so they were...
