I painted it black in the middle of hubcap.

Ive seen them done in red but never the colour of the car. The wheels were pained the colour of the car... two tone

Bloody time consuming... i mask each hubcap and cut the tape from the area... then undercoated and finally sprayed 2 coats of black enamel.

Lucky i did them at work.

Oh yeah thanks to Pete Speedster356 for taking the pics.

Not that I really know, but I though the hub caps were usually body colour??
Or was that an early Kombi thing?

No the Australian factory never went into that detail. All the Australian hubcaps were stamped here, chromed and painted black. The VWs left the Melbourne factory without hubcaps - they were put in plastic inside the car and fitted by the dealers once they were at their yards. This was to preventy damage during transport.

Caring dealers would sometimes paint over the black in red, and I daresay it's possible that some MIGHT have done it in body colour too at a customer's request. but certainly not at the factory.

there is an easier way to do the coloured letters... spray colour over then carefully wipe top immediately with cloth covered in terps. works brilliantlyand saves masking.

Turps ... how do you get the bit of paint of the middle section of the VW emblem

No they were defiently sprayed at the factory... not brushed...

Brushing is just a tedious... much easier to mask and spray and a better job

Don't ask me, it's just when people talk Jewish food they talk Gefilte Fish a lot cos it's such a Yiddish word I guess

Jewish telegram: "Begin worrying. Details to follow."

Anyway stock or modified, I do tend to lean more toward stock but can appreciate a cool modified when I see one

I dunno Dave, which one do you like best?

:) L'Chayim:beer

Hmmm, finding the older stock engines take a lot of care and parts can be hard to find or replace so can understand how people would modify or upgrade engine and voltage if wanting to drive daily.

Also if body is not in wonderful condition or making something up from several different bodies, then a decision could easily be made to modify and do something different. But if you have a reasonably sound body, a sweet ride and it is old/rarer, then decision for me would be impossible

stock vs modded

MODIFIED

in beetles, i like modified. gives them more personality and reflects on the owner.

kgs stock. cos they look so nice that all you would want to do is cruise slowly. and they cost to much to buy in the first place.
