Oh its not that much different now with 200bhp on tap.
I'dd be watching those rocky tracks as those Kombi boxs aren't as indistructable as you might think , just ask 11Cab how long it take to change one
in the bush , and his was only VW powered

Yep 1700 gearbox, 2L type 4 and 33 inch mudders........
Broke every tooth of the pinion at 4.30pm on a Sunday afternoon deep in the bush.......drove it out after a gearbox swap on the track at
8.30pm......nota bad effort I thought......

Yes i was thinking of the gearbox but i would have been a lot more worried if i had 200hp my 2.2 and the gearing with 245/16 rears seemed a perfect match

I'mm pretty sure he was running the same fronts as mine which are 235 / 75 15" and as mine also he had a 110mm beam lift in the front.
Heres a pic of his twin cab.

My uncle's dual cab runs 10R 31.5" on the front and 12.5 33" on the rear. Obviously independant reduction box set up make a bit of a difference to
gearing.
My cousin's split panel van has Renault gearbox with 12.5 33" and powered by decent 2L will go anywhere. He cannot break it apart from breaking the
body off the chassis. It required some more bracing and a lot of welding to "stitch" it back on.
Ken Brown's (Brownie's coastwatch) Buggy runs Renault box with full airbag set up and fully adjustable independant rear end. Combine it with disc
brakes all round and it is absolutely unstopable with 12R's on the rear.Car is going to go up for sale soon. U2U me if you may interested. Will be
asking around $30k plus for it. The best engineered Buggy you'll ever see.

got any pics of it?
BTW, I picked up my new 2l gearbox from Dunhams (Schimo) today. It's not even in the car yet and only has a few basic mods (0.77 albins top/t3
superdiff/moly pinion nut) and there's not a lot of change from $3k.
Be nice to your gearboxes boys. I drove my 1800/subie like a Nana mostly and it still snapped the end of the main shaft eventually.

Hey Pete...yeah three grand would be a shock to me too but...the box is already 30 years old and now it should last another 30...works out
$100/year But i think Brad said it all...every working part in
there is suffering some metal fatigue and suddenly it is being asked to cope with twice the load....faark...i'd shit myself too

Those pics were before the Renault box/disc brakes etc etc were done. Car is in great condition considering it spends 4 odd months a year on Moreton
Island. I have been detailing it since it was built and it gets polished and a coat of wax about 4 times a year with washes in between. If I had the
money I"d own it as it drives like a normal car and doesn't feel like it sits as high as it does.

I gather it's the 5speed renault? The car does look very nice. Dunno about all the fishing rods though. still if he catches the fish I guess I'm more than happy to eat em.
BTW, The 1800 box in my car was rebuilt. So it wasn't 30yo. It's not double the load that kills em, it's things wearing out completely or shock
loading. Still if you must drive like an idiot you will pay for it. I wish I'd at least got to drive like an idiot!

Yup 5 speed tranny. you'd have to do something pretty crazy to break one of them. Crownwheel is like 9.25" in diameter!! My cousin hasn't managed
to break his in his split Panel van yet(Done a few CV's) and if anyone was to break a Renault tranny he'd be the one to do it.
