Hi Joel

I'm not sure about the no vent look. Have you noticed any difference in motor temperatures?

well so far it hasnt even been off the farm yet but its not getting hot doing some paddock work  so we're sweet

i doubt it will have any effect, the only thing that needs air in there is the air filter and theres plenty coming up over the gearbox not to mention off the roof from back window vent

besides theres plenty of early bugs getting around with subis with no probs
would be alot more heat under micks decklid than mine

The vents in the decklid let hot air out, plus I think it looks better with the proper decklid.

so i had to head into town this morn to run some errands, its 20km in, about 5km of round town running about and 20km back out here
as i expected absolutely no change in both coolant and oil temps

what people have to bear in mind is this isnt an aircooled motor
all the heat exchanging is done up the front in the radiator and underneath in the stainless pipes

you can see in the subabeetle thread when i pulled the heads off the old motor how thick the blocks are
the little bit of extra air coming in through the vents isnt going to have any cooling affect

VW only started punching the vents into the decklids in 70 when they brought out the twinport doghouse engines ( which we didnt see in aus till start of 71) cos the doghouse fan is wider and sucks in more air than the rear window vent can supply.
the old singleport fans though get adequate air just through it though which is why all bugs before 70 have non vented lids, except cabrios which is another story

the other thing to remember to this isnt sealed into the engine bay with tinware like a vw engine so theres all the road draft from underneath coming up over the gearbox as well

a vw engine will run cooler with either the firewall tin removed or ducting into it like Daimo made
problem with removing it is the shit that comes up off the road gets sucked into the fan

i've just had to remove all the tinware off dads trike to replace some damaged tins and i found plenty of grass in the fins thats been sucked into the fan

the vw engine is sealed into the engine bay so all the hotair stays underneath
the fan pulls in fresh air through the back window vent and decklid vents on twin port cars (not letting hot air out) and then blows it all out underneath through the cylinders and heads

thats why its important to keep all original tinware in place and not have holes in it

the only thing that needs a supply of air on this EJ is the air filter and im sure it would get adequate cold air coming off the roof and dumping into the vents below the window which its right in the stream of

the decklid swap was a few reasons
firstly for looks
i think it keeps nice cleaner lines without the vents and badge
but also it was a weather thing as well, theres lots of electronics on these engines that dont like getting wet, especially coil packs and AFMs

i havent had any probs yet after a few wet trips and washing it a couple of times but i know ians bug is allergic to water which was why he put the rain tray inside the decklid

Good explanation joel!. your trip on sunday will probably be the best test of how it will perform and the difference in temps on 'long'ish trips.

where is the list to add my name to for gettng a spin in 74L on the weekend :D :)

The Rim Whore at it again

Last weeks rims were soooooo last week....

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd191/boostedbug/LBug/100_0856.jpg

Going by my usual philosophy of why pay $160 each for new tyres when i can get 4 good second hand ones for $400 and as a bonus they came with some perfect Lite-7s
so the bug is now on rim set number 11 i think this is
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd191/boostedbug/LBug/Lbug007_renamed_5420.jpg

I've always liked Lite-7s but there a more upmarket lightweight rim and at $1699 with tyres new theres not many of them out there for cheap so when i came across these for $400 i jumped on them

dated 2007 and not a mark on any of them I'm stoked
about the only aftermarket rims ive got that the center caps clear a vw axle nut

still deciding if i like the colour, its rally gold but its some kind of pearl, they go gold in the sun but are silver in the shade

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd191/boostedbug/LBug/Lbug013_renamed_27744.jpg

they came off a drift car so theyve never seen gutters or dodgy weather etc

dunno bout white bit too much on a white car

http://www.lakeshorewheelandtire.com/wheels/speedy-lite-7-white.JPG

if i go anything itll be gun metal grey

http://www.tyreplusgateshead.com.au/images/speedy/lite7gunmetal.jpg

contrasts nicely on a white car

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b167/dyl51/wrx003.jpg

but seems a waste to paint them theyres not a mark on any of them

Freaking love it Joel. Looks sooooo good. those wheels suit super well and the center cap is a mega bonus. the gold is quite an interesting contrast. i agree, its a shame to paint it since there is no marks on them.

Boost crusing...

ebay.com.au

know what style of rims you want, buy then, then get brakes (discs and drums) to suit.... I may have learnt the hard way.

I havent really taken any decent ones since swapping the rims or raising it back up
