Reckon you don't know good music when you hear it, reminds me of a club rally I ran in back bout '70-"71 real pissed off when I in my 404 couldn't keep up with a super bug (least i think that's what it was, only saw it from behind) had to admit it was me and not the car, could'nt bear to think the Pug was being beaten by a bloody krouty.

mmm, love a set of those 46 IDAs and the porsche box. shouldn't be too hard to find some. :(

But how awesome did that car sound. :tu:

I've been introducing my daughter to the idea of building a salzburg replica in a few years. The wife's not convinced yet, but that's ok. Still plenty of time.

Hi

Don't get me wrong about the music, but I would rather listen to a flat 4 with 46 IDAs any day,,,,,,,,,,,,,,well for a while anyway.

Pete, I used to have genuine Porsche 904 46 IDAs on my 1302 many years ago, I still get emails from people finding my 1302 specs on the net and wanting to buy them from me, they would be worth a mozza now.

Oh, so they got the 46s off 904s. interesting, explains why they are so unheard of and rare (I mean really rare, not EBAY rare ;) ). that's your old waterboxer. personally I'd be going for EFI as that's acceptable for CAMS PRC cars. Should be a little more easily tunable for people like me who have no idea with carbs at all.

You know the sad story about these cars is they sat idle in Austria during the petrol crisis in the 70s and literally fell apart with rust as Germany wouldn't allow them into the country (for export) and all motorsport in Austria was cancelled due to the fuel crisis. Very sad. They should have been sold off and raced elsewhere, but there you go, very sad. Imagine how different the 70s rallying scene in Aust would have looked if we'd got even one of these cars expat out Austria. Datsun 1600s would have come off second best I think. :(

Hi

I did eventually go EFI on the old bug. I sold them for $1000.00 in the late 90s. 46 IDAs were very nice on the street and could nearly match a 48 IDA.

I followed rallying very closely many years ago. I remember in the 70s when a Beetle won a round of the WRC in New Caledonia, apparently they were locals and borrowed the car from one of the crews wife.

We had some local VW peddlers who gave the local cars curry.

true, but bugs never really got close to datto 1600s for local appeal. shame really, if we'd had the option of a factory 5 speed box and some OHC heads the beetle would have been untouchable. Maybe somewhat like the alpine A110.

If I get to build my replica it will get a berg 5 speed eventually. Either that or maybe someone will come up with a cheap way of converting subaru trannies to run about face. how good would that be for the VW scene?

Well the cars did not"rust into the ground". The majority were sold off in '74 to privatiers and kept racing until the early '80s. The last overall victory was in'78 where a 6 year old former "Salzburg Beetle" won the Austrian Rallye of January. Some of them were converted by Porsche Salzburg into "Rallye Cross" vehicles using type 4 engines. They also won the overall European rally cross championship in'74.
If you are interrested in some more footage, visit:http://www.salzburgkaefer.at. It's all in German, but got nice pictures .
