A true VW holiday
About two months ago I was chatting with Toby….you know him as ‘type3lover’ on here.
He was telling me about how he was nearly ready to put everything back together on his notch project, we were discussing all the little jobs that
needed to be done before it could have it’s motor back.
Somewhere in the conversation a light bulb popped up above my head, and through that idea I booked a week of work and a flight to Sydney and Toby
booked the same week of work.
For 6 days all we did was work on the notch, talk about working on the notch or drink beer while admiring the work we’d done on the notch.
My idea of a great holiday!
Here’s a few pics to give you an idea of what we we’re upto….
I’ll leave Toby to update his members rides thread for detailed info on what has actually gone into this car.
first three pics are: the starting point, mounting the megasquirt gear in the back (this was probably a 3 or 4 hour discussion before we drilled the
first hole). and finally putting new fuel lines and wiring through....

i can't seem to get the pics to appear in the order i want them in....
so, in no particular order, here we have:
me working in the engine bay, probably sat in there for a day or two....
the work under the fuel tank, and
the engine ready to go in.

finally a shot of pretty much how i had to leave it, we never quite got it to run, but when you're adding this much technology to a 40year old car,
it's no real surprise...
so when Toby sees this thread he'll probably fill in a few details that i forgot in a haze of beer and spanners....
hope you enjoy the pics, cos i really enjoyed the holiday!
cheers

Hey man nice one! Now I have to stop being lazy and share some pics as well!! :-)
We got a lot done that week but finally couldn't get it running right.
I've since narrowed it down to a dodgy hall sensor in the dizzy. The datalogs of it running showed the rpm signal dropping out intermittently.
Good news is it's a commonly sold part from Jaycar called a HKZ-101 and is only $20 to buy.
Shielding the wiring will help as well as this seems to be a known problem on efi conversions involving megasquirt II.
I'll grab a new one and fit it next time I have a day off.
Kai and I got more done in a week of solid work and drinking than I've managed to do in months.
Thanks mate!!!!!!!!!!

Good thing with working on a Type 3 is there is plenty of room either side of the engine bay to rest drinks, tools and the like. I thought the boot in
my brothers Fasty would have heaps of room left once the engine etc went in.
Now there is next no space left with things like dry sump tanks, intake manifolds, Porshce fan shroud, big breathers and catch can filling it up
rather nicely. then again the room under the floor is gone too with a spaghetti of pipework, intercooler, turbo, oil lines and dry sump pump, massive
oil cooler and extra engine and gearbox mounts filling it everywhere you look.
