heater installation
I have installed a 125/250watt heater in to the kombi [$40 from jaycar]. I have hooked it to a seperate switch to turn on/off instead of on the heater
it self,but I want to only work with the ignition turned on so which fuse would be best to power it,and what number is it, as the
heater will use a fair bit of power,I have also have put a fuse on the heater supply wire [25 amp].

Mike,
...use a test light with the ignition off...some will be constant...mark these...then turn your ignition on to red's only and test the
remainder....ok
I think a 25 amp fuse is too big. Try 10-15 amp...you want the heater to stop before anything else...

250watts on a 12volt system will draw 20.8amps all day long, stick with the 25amp fuse. If you pick up your supply off an existing curcuit that is
fused(e.g ignition) and the heater shorts out ...car stops ,not good(or what ever is on that circuit)Best bet is to run an in line fuse holder with
25amp fuse directly off the battery,connect to a 6mm cable .Run the cable towards the heater and connect it to a 30amp relay(if you dont run a relay
your switch will burn out in no time).Connect one side of your switch to negative(earth) and the other to the relay,this way the switch only activates
the relay, then the relay will handle all the load.The only draw back is the heater can be operated with the ignition off,but at least it wont cause
problems further down the track |

Hi
Like Jak said use a relay. Just take the power to the relay from the battery and then have the switching wire ignition controlled. Check the fuses
with a test light, some loose power when you crank the starter which is a good idea in this case.

Hi Sand Kombi,
Is this heater any good ? Does it put out much heat ? Would be interested to see how well it would work in a buggy !!!!

*nod* The only way to do this. Ignition must be on and switch must be on for heater to operate.
I too am interested in hearing about the heater. Is it THIS ONE? (hope the link works,
stock code YS2805 $39.95?)

Ive got a heater in my bus too, sitting under the seat, unfortunatelt the coil or something is stuffed at the moment, so will have to do some work on
it. i wonder if sitting under the drivers seat is a clever place tho(where mine is) - restricted airflow ect?

sounds like the same one. works but not great,needs to be on the 250w setting but will be needed to wired up as taths said as the switch gets really
hot. it takes a while to heat up the kombi,but no great difference just seems to be a a bit warmer,could be a lot better:beer

When you think about it 250W is not really all that much heat. Just a bit more than a couple of light globes really. A small bar heater for a house
is 1500W.

which type of relay would be best 4 or 5 pole ,and what is the difference
