A couple of questions about guards & motor
Q1). I have some flared guards that I am considering putting on my 68 as it is not standard anyways. Does one size fit all or are their different
variations. My speedo has 68 stamped on the rear of it and I believe it is original. Rego papers says 1968 but he previous Qld papers say 1970 very
confusing,
The stamp behind the spare wheel has the numbers 114 6356. The chassis number under the rear seat shows 119 146 176
Q2). I have the motor out as it was leaking oil like my pasta strainer. Obviously I need a gasket kit through it. My brother has suggested that since
the heads will be off why not upsize the pistons etc. Who can advise on whats required and the benefits? Currently I have a borrowed 1680 with twin
solexes on it from a Kombi. Has a bit more punch but it drinks a bit as well obviously. Not sure whatthe size is of my engine but the engine number is
AR 067125. I would love a professionally rebuilt motor but thanks to the RBA's interest rate increases the $3500 I had for the car has now been
allocated elsewhere by the Minister of War and Finance in my home.
Any advice greatly appreciated. Rob.

Cancel question 1. In my fit of rage after spending 2 days sanding away to find things don't fit I forgot I had a Super bug (71) in the driveway.
They are different by about 65mm in length and a bit wider. Guess the old girl will not be having big ears after all.

the 114 number is just the production code number
119 146 176 vin makes it an early 69 beetle so being made of 68 parts is normal
rear gaurds are all the same bolt pattern and fronts are between all standard beetles but S and L bugs are different fronts as u found out

Thanks for that. I went for a drive to Sydney today and George at Classic Veedub filled ime in on what the minimum is I can do to boost the old cars
heart just a wee bit without breaking the bank. He had 2 nice rebuilds on the floor ready to go out.

AR blocks were 74-75 1300 engines
but good chance its been fitted with 1600 jugs cos they bolt straight in and are cheaper and easier to get than 1300s
if u got the heads off the 1300 pistons are 77mm and 1600s are 85.5
